According to reports, the series is based on the non-fiction book Revolutionaries: The Other Story Of How India Won Its Freedom by Sanjeev Sanyal. The series explores the lives of young Indian freedom fighters who engage in armed resistance against British colonial rule. Amid the buzz, here’s how the series ends.
Plotline of The Revolutionaries explained and recap of episode 8 (Spoiler alert)
The Revolutionaries is an eight-episode series that revisits India’s freedom struggle, especially the secret and underground activities of revolutionaries who fought against British rule. The story focuses on revolutionaries such as 'Rash Behari Bose' (played by Bhuvam Bam), 'Sachindranath Sanyal' (played by Rohit Saraf), 'Bagha Jatin' (played by Gurfateh Pirzada) and 'Pratibha Lahiri' (played by Pratibha Ranta).
The series explores the revolutionaries’ secret plans, conspiracies, friendships, relationships and sacrifices for India's independence. It shows how an armed revolution took place against British rule. Unlike Mahatma Gandhi, these revolutionaries believed that Indians might need to fight the British with weapons to gain freedom. The series takes place mainly during the 1910s and moves between places such as Banaras, Dehradun, Delhi and Kolkata.
The last episode of The Revolutionaries, which is episode 8, begins three weeks later in Lahore. The revolutionaries are preparing for their secret movement, Ghadar. This was a planned rebellion in which Indian soldiers would fight against the British. They have about three months to prepare themselves for the armed revolution. However, 'Rash Behari Bose' loses hope as he learns that 'Bagha Jatin' succumbed to his injuries. He feels that continuing the fight against the British may be pointless.
At the moment, 'Sachindranath Sanyal' reminds 'Rash Behari Bose' that 'Bagha Jatin' never gave up on India’s freedom. Around the same time, 'Pratibha' gets to know that women in Banaras have received letters from their husbands and loved ones who are serving as British soldiers. While the British censored many parts of the letters, 'Pratibha' understands that they are unhappy with the British Raj. She believes that, just like them, the soldiers are equally angry and are ready to rebel.
'Pratibha' and 'Abani Sanyal' (played by Tota Roy Chowdhury) travel to Lahore and tell 'Rash Behari Bose' about this. This makes 'Bose' hopeful again, and the revolutionaries restart their preparations for the Ghadar movement. They also get help from 'Tejinder Singh' (played by Raman Dhagga), a soldier who is unhappy because the British made Indian soldiers fight in World War I despite making false promises to them.
The revolutionaries secretly connect with soldiers in different military camps and plan February 21, 1915, as Ghadar Day. 'Kirpal Singh' (played by Riyansh Taneja) also joins the revolutionaries, but he is unhappy with the leadership. According to 'Kirpal', 'Bose', who is a Bengali professor, should not lead the fighters. He is also angry about 'Bose' getting time to mourn the death of 'Bagha Jatin' while the ordinary fighters don't get the same privilege to mourn their families.
The Revolutionaries ending explained
'Kirpal' is particularly unhappy with 'Pratibha', a woman who gives orders to the male revolutionaries. He always dreamed of joining the British army but was rejected when he was younger because he was considered physically weak. Eventually, 'Kirpal' decides to betray the revolutionaries and tell British officer 'General Dyer' (played by Jason Shah) about their secret plan in exchange for becoming a CID officer.
However, the revolutionaries catch 'Kirpal'. But he escapes during the chaos. During the failed Ghadar uprising, 'Pratibha' and her love, 'Sachindranath', get separated. 'Sachindranath' is arrested and sent to Kala Paani prison, while 'Pratibha' continues fighting. As 'Kirpal' leaked the revolutionaries' secret plan to the British, they took away the Indian soldiers' weapons and locked them inside their barracks.
On February 19, 1915, the revolutionaries attacked the Mian Mir cantonment in Lahore. The British were already prepared; thus, 'Bose' and his men suffered. Even though the revolutionaries are losing, they make one final attempt to send a message. 'Sachindranath' and the other fighters distract 'General Dyer', while 'Bose' and 'Pratibha' climb up to replace the British flag with their Ghadar flag.
