As seen at the end of The Last House, five years have gone by. The 'Delgado' family is trapped inside the house, and there is no way out. The family has managed to survive by creating a self-sufficient life. However, things change when an animal bites a daughter of the 'Delgado' family. The only way her life can be saved is by getting medicine from outside.
While searching for a way to leave the house, the 'Delgado' family comes across underground pipes connected to the world outside. 'Ruth' is seen trying to crawl through the pipes to find the medicine. When she tries to return, she comes across a gigantic sea creature. 'Ruth' puts up a brave fight and then manages to escape.
'Delgado' family in The Last House realize they cannot be trapped in their homes forever
The 'Delgado' family, as seen in The Last House, understand that in order to survive, they have to find a way out. All of them are seen going together to fight the sea creature. However, the family is still not able to open up the sealed doors. 'Jason' threatens to kill the sea creature but then understands that it has been protecting the home all these years. However, 'Jason' does not kill the creature but just cuts the rope and sets it free. The family is then seen stepping out.
The 'Delgado' family thinks that there are no other survivors apart from them. The family is seen boarding their fishing boat and then heading out to the sea in search of a new life. They are seen calling out over the radio and wondering if any survivors were left behind. Well, just before the end of the movie, the family hears a faint and distorted voice, which hints that they may not have been the only survivors.
Fans may have wondered if there were forces that kept the family locked inside the house. According to a Netflix report, the extraterrestrial creatures are the old ocean dwellers who had lived on Earth way longer than humanity existed. Louis Leterrier, who has directed The Last House, stated:
"They’ve been there way before us. We are living on their planet. After humans overconsumed, polluted the environment, raised global temperatures, and began boiling the oceans, the creatures finally emerged from the depths."
The director and production designer Kevin Jenkins, wanted the creatures to feel mysterious and not look like sea animals. Kevin came up with the idea after the director was sent a drawing. A sense of aura was created around the creatures. They wanted the audience to fill in the gaps and not exactly understand the origin of the creatures. The makers ensured to show the deep struggles of the family in years of confinement. The movie jumps forward quickly, and the set was designed so the house is shown in a dilapidated condition. Jenkins added:
"We didn’t want it to look like a house was demolished. These people are still living in there as a family. Instead, the walls, floors, and furniture bear evidence of thousands of desperate survival decisions. The chimney gives the 'Delgados' their opening — literally — but creativity, teamwork, and routine are what keep them alive for five years."
