The Cult Behind The Killer, Investigation Discoveries' new docuseries, is unleashing the layers of the 2001 case of Andrea Yates, a young mother who ended up drowning her five children in her home's bathtub, which led her babies to die. After killing her babies, whose ages ranged from 6 months to 7 years, she called 911 and confessed to the crime. This incident sent ripples during that time, and now, with ID's new docuseries, the case again hit the viewers, while revealing deep-rooted truths and layers in Andrea's story.
In 2006, Andrea was found not guilty due to insanity, which was caused by postpartum psychosis, leading her to kill her five kids, Noah, John, Paul, Luke, and Mary. In the docuseries, her ex-husband, Russell, who is known as Rusty Yates, stated that his ex-wife's battle with mental illness began in 1999, after giving birth to her five children. So, where are Andrea and Rusty now? And is he still connected to Andrea? Let's have a look!
Andrea Yates was born in 1964 in Houston, Texas. As per Rusty, she was born in a stable household, with her being the youngest of her siblings. Andrea was good at studies, and in 1986, he earned a nursing degree. She bagged a role as a registered nurse in a cancer treatment center. In 1989, she got married to Rusty, and in 1993, she left her job and was committed to her family life. After Andrea was convicted of capital murder, Rusty filed for a divorce from her in 2004, and their divorce was finalised in 2005, as per what was shared on NBC News.
Russell Yates has kept his life private since the time Andrea Yates was arrested. In 2006, he got married to someone named Laura Arnold, and they chose to move on with their lives. In 2008, Russell and Laura gave birth to their son, Mark. It's not known where Rusty currently resides. Talking about Andrea, drowning her five kids was, as per her, a way to save the five from the devil. She was first sentenced to life in prison in 2002.
Later, after it was found that she was not mentally well during that time, in 2006, a new trial was ruled. She, according to the reports, is currently at Kerrville State Hospital in Kerrville, Texas. It was also said that Andrea was heavily influenced by a preacher, Michael Woroniecki, who said he was never responsible for causing the death of the kids, although he said he was the spiritual leader of the couple.

Rusty Yates was seen in the docuseries, wherein he shared some unheard anecdotes, one of which was from 1999, when Andrea first showed the signs of illness. As per Rusty, they were in Andrea's mother's house when she entered the bathroom and was found holding a knife near her neck. Although she didn't harm herself, she was later diagnosed with postpartum depression. He said:
"We were still at Andrea’s mother’s house and Andrea walked off. I open the bathroom door and she is standing, looking at herself in the mirror, with a knife up to her neck. She just stood there, catatonic. She didn’t actually harm herself, but she was hospitalized at that point. The doctors told me that Andrea had postpartum depression, explained the seriousness of the illness, that women who have postpartum depression can develop postpartum psychosis. But I didn’t know what psychosis looked like, what it meant."
It's not known whether Rusty is still connected to Andrea or not. In an episode of Good Morning America, he said that after welcoming his son, Mark, with Laura, he sent her a photo of the little one via email, and she called the then-newborn 'cute'. Back then, he said that he used to trade emails with her once a week, or talk on a call once a month. Rusty further said that while the incident was really hurtful, it was not Andrea who did it, it was rather her illness, thus he won't blame her. He said:
"She’s like, ‘He’s so cute.’ She was pretty excited. We probably trade an e-mail once a week or so and maybe talk on the phone once a month. Even though it was horribly wrong, it was horribly hurtful to me, my family, everybody, it’s really the illness, you know, that caused this, not her. So, I can’t blame her."
