Taylor Swift recently released The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. Needless to say, it immediately became one of the most talked-about songs from her deluxe release. In fact, in Patient Zero, she sings about the perspective of someone who faced heartbreak from their toxic partner. But later, the person connects with his toxic ex's new girlfriend.
Especially, her lyrics like "If you're sick of him, I got you, I was patient zero," immediately sparked fan theories on which ex might be that "toxic partner." However, Taylor herself ended all the guesswork by sharing the real-life inspiration behind the song during an interview with Capital FM. She explained that the idea came to her after she had a discussion with one of her friends. In her words:
"I was hanging out with a bunch of friends, and one of my friends told us that she had been reached out to by the new girlfriend of an ex of hers, asking for guidance on whether she had had the same experiences with this guy."
Taylor Swift mentioned that everyone in her group resonated with the feeling. In turn, it became her inspiration for the new song. Sharing the thought in her interview, she said:
"Everyone in our group just immediately started saying, 'Oh, I've been through that too,' and telling the stories of when this kind of reach out had happened for them."
Despite the explanation, many fans are confident that the song refers to her ex, Joe Jonas, and his former wife, Sophie Turner. For those who don't know, the popular star briefly dated Joe in 2008 before their highly-publicized split. After some years, he began to date Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner. Later, they welcomed two daughters before announcing their separation in 2023.
After their split, Taylor and Sophie were often seen together in New York City. The singer also reportedly offered the actress her apartment as a place to stay during the early days of her divorce and custody proceedings.
Therefore, fans began to connect the dots and connect the trio to Patient Zero. Some fans also made the theories that she is the first person to experience the emotional heartbreak of a relationship with Joe, before later supporting Sophie in a similar situation. Meanwhile, some fans believe that the song is a reference to her ex, Joe Alwyn.

Patient Zero is a part of The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. It is an expanded edition of Taylor Swift's 2025 album with the same name. The deluxe project comprises four new songs. They are co-produced by Taylor's longtime collaborators Max Martin and Shellback. Apart from Patient Zero, other songs in the release are Cleveland! Pink, Clouding and Babylon.
Since Taylor had previously claimed that she had no immediate plans to release a deluxe version of the album, these songs came as a surprise to fans. In fact, she shared that when she was celebrating the success of the original song in Sweden, she and her collaborators got the inspiration to add more music.
