Tara Lipinski recently opened up about heartbreaking family news. During a May 1, 2026, conversation with Maria Shriver on Today, the former Olympic figure skater had opened up about the fact that she is planning to try for another child with her husband, Todd Kapostasy. She said that she was going to use the embryos that they created during what she called a gruelling process. Now, in a tragic update, Tara shared about the loss of the baby.
Just hours after Tara Lipinski shared on Today that she is trying for another baby, he revealed that she has lost her second child. For those unaware, after suffering from infertility and surgeries, Tara and her husband, Todd, finally welcomed their daughter, Georgie, via surrogacy in 2023. She told Today's Maria Shriver that they were going to use surrogacy again to welcome their second child. Noting that they still have embryos remaining from the first time, Tara said, “I joke…we're going to use all five of those embryos.” Later that day, in an emotional Instagram post, Tara revealed that she and her husband had experienced a second-trimester pregnancy loss during their ongoing surrogacy process.

Tara wrote that she didn't think she was ready to share her story yet, as it is something that can truly break a person. She said that it was a few months ago that she and her husband lost their baby in the second trimester after being on their surrogacy journey for two years. She wrote:
"Our first surrogate, who carried Georgie, wasn't medically cleared to proceed with our sibling journey. I grieved that ending, and we started over. From the long road in finding a surrogate, to medical clearance setbacks, to a failed transfer, and now this loss… it hasn't been an easy road."

Tara claimed that she feels “incredibly lucky” for the person who carried her baby and that they will always have a special place in her heart. She also expressed her gratitude for her first surrogate, whom she revealed had supported her from afar through this process. Calling the second-trimester loss “devastating,” she said that this would be added to the long list of heartbreaks they have already endured on this fertility journey. According to Tara, it is “another memory that will be hard to erase.” She added:
"That appointment will be etched in my mind forever, as well as all the steps that came after, when a pregnancy is that far along. My heart goes out to all the people who have experienced miscarriage, baby loss and stillbirth. You are warriors."

Tara Lipinski has always been open about her struggles with infertility. According to a report by People, the former athlete has had over four D&Cs. For those unaware, it is a surgical procedure that is usually performed after a miscarriage, where the cervix is dilated to remove the abnormal tissue from the uterus lining. After some time, Tara was diagnosed with endometriosis, and she had to undergo two major surgeries. While Tara and her husband welcomed their daughter, Georgie, via surrogate in October 2023, she opened up about the journey to bring another little one and expand their family in May 2025. While talking to People, Tara said:
