After Sydney received heavy criticism for Euphoria and her previous projects, the actress spoke at length about her controversial scenes. In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Sydney addressed nudity and why she has no qualms about it. Revealing how people forget that she is just playing a character, Sydney said:
“People forget that I'm playing a character; they think, 'Oh, she gets naked onscreen, she's a sex symbol.’ And I can't get past that. I have no problems with those scenes, and I won't stop doing them, but I wish there was an easier way to have an open conversation about what we're assuming about actors in the industry."
Sydney Sweeney revealed the negative impact of her bold scenes
Apart from Euphoria, Sweeney has experimented with bold roles in The Voyeurs and Anyone, But You. Sweeney has carved a niche in the glamour world playing emotionally complex and unapologetically bold characters. While Sweeney is confident in her skin and the power it brings on screen, she also shared the downsides of on-screen nudity. In a Cosmopolitan interview, Sweeney revealed that because of her bold scenes, people never took her seriously and shared, ‘I don’t think as many people took me seriously in Euphoria because I took my shirt off’.
In the same interaction, Sweeney also pointed out the double standards of people when a male star does a nude scene. Sweeney shared that when a male actor does a nude scene or even if they take off their shirt, they either get a role or an Oscar. But that is not the same for an actress, who gets bullied, trolled and tagged with names online.
Born as Sydney Bernice Sweeney, the talented actress made her acting debut as a child star on television in 2009 with a minute role in the series Heroes. She played supporting roles in television shows such as 90210, Criminal Minds, Grey's Anatomy and Pretty Little Liars. After many supporting roles, Sydney took the role of ‘Cassie Howard’ in the drama series Euphoria. The show was a breakthrough hit, and her performance was hugely appreciated.
Her many nude scenes in the series received significant attention and generated a conversation about nudity in film. During one of her interviews, Sweeney shared how her parents reacted to her bold scenes in which she's almost nude. The 28-year-old actress was quoted by Us Weekly as saying her mom supported her work, but her dad couldn’t take it.
Sharing more details, Sweeney revealed that she didn’t prepare her dad to watch her bold avatar on screen. She also recalled that once, her father and grandfather decided to watch her show, but then they soon turned it off and walked out.
