Sydney Sweeney Said Her 'Euphoria' Role Makes Her A 'Sex Symbol', Fans Criticise OnlyFans Storyline

Euphoria Season 3 premiered on April 12, 2026 and its second episode dropped on April 26, 2026. Following that, it's lead stars, Sydney Sweeney (playing 'Cassie'), Jacob Elordi (playing 'Nate'), and Zendaya (playing 'Rue') are once again in focus. The show has been leading fan discussion forums due to its controversial storyline, particularly including 'Cassie's' OnlyFans puppy roleplay and her cosplay as a baby, wearing nothing but a diaper. Amid the backlash surrounding her role, her comment on on-screen nudity is in focus.

Sydney Sweeney opened up about the criticism she faced due to her Euphoria character

Sydney Sweeney's Euphoria character, 'Cassie Howard' has been over-the-top and controversial since the series' first season. The actress faced intense online scrutiny due to her character's unjustifiable actions and for portraying adult scenes and nudity. After Season 2 of the show aired, Sydney shared her stance regarding the audience's reaction to her role in a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The 28-year-old actress expressed frustration with how audiences blend her personal identity with the roles she plays, specifically her portrayal of 'Cassie Howard' in Euphoria.

Sydney addressed how her on-screen nudity led to her being reduced to a "sex symbol" label that overshadows her performance as an actor. She feels that viewers sometimes forget that, behind an on-screen character, there is a real person with a distinct personality. The actress mentioned she wouldn't be able to move on from the hate she received due to her Euphoria role, however, she also stated that she would keep doing such roles in the future, as it just widened her scope as an actor. Her exact words were:

"People forget that I'm playing a character, they think, 'Oh, she gets naked onscreen, she's a sex symbol. And I can't get past that. I have no problems with those scenes, and I won't stop doing them, but I wish there was an easier way to have an open conversation about what we're assuming about actors in the industry."

Sydney Sweeney's Euphoria Season 3 OnlyFans narrative drew backlash

Sydney Sweeney's character, 'Cassie Howard', drew intense backlash following the premiere of Euphoria Season 3 in April 2026 due to a storyline involving adult content creation on OnlyFans. The backlash centred on several highly provocative scenes, including her being shown in a sexualised child-like attire, including pigtails, a diaper, and a pacifier. She posed for the photos while being topless and sitting like a baby, sparking a hate train. Another scene featured her cosplaying a dog and acting like a pet for online content. According to the show's narrative, 'Cassie' turns to OnlyFans to fund her dream wedding to 'Nate Jacobs' (Jacob Elordi).

'Cassie's' desperation for earning big bucks to fund her extravagant wedding ceremony even leads her to consult her fiancé's ex-girlfriend, 'Maddy Perez' (Alexa Demie). Viewers on social media labelled the OnlyFans storyline as "disgusting," "disturbing," and "fetish slop". Many accused the creator, Sam Levinson, of humiliating female characters and pushing the show into a weird direction. Not just the fans, popular OnlyFans creator, Sophie Rain also criticised the 'Cassie's' character development.

Sophie, who has reportedly earned over USD 100 million on OnlyFans, argued that the show's portrayal of content creation on the platform was unrealistic and "dramatic for entertainment." She stated that neither she nor any of the top creators she knows would "degrade themselves" in the manner depicted in the series. Sophie specifically called out the scene featuring 'Cassie' dressed as an infant for content creation, and said that such depictions "should almost be illegal." According to her, the screenwriters "did not get it right" regarding how creators actually operate and maintain their boundaries in OnlyFans.
