The widely loved HBO Max medical drama, The Pitt, delivered an emotional farewell to 'Dr. Samira Mohan' at the finale episode of Season 2. The character, played by Supriya Ganesh, had become a regular and fan favourite, and her exit from the show has sparked curiosity among fans about whether the makers completely wrote the character off or if she may still return for Season 3.
While the episode didn’t frame Dr. Mohan's exit as a dramatic goodbye, it quietly closed a chapter that had been building all season. From her personal struggles, professional setbacks, and tense dynamics with Noah Wyle's 'Dr. Robby'. With her hinting at a career in (spoiler alert!) geriatrics after her break, does there lie any possibility of her returning to the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Centre?

In the season finale, which aired on April 16, 2026, Dr. Samira Mohan’s goodbye to the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Centre was far quieter than expected, yet emotionally significant. After a season marked by tension with Dr. Robby, their final interaction carried a rare sense of calm. While his earlier approach towards her had been critical and dismissive, there was a hint of understanding.

Throughout the season, Dr. Mohan opened up about her personal struggles, including ongoing conflict with her mother, and how it had affected her work. She finally shares a moment of understanding with Noah Wyle’s Dr. Robby after a tense season. Her line, "We need you here, even if you can be a dick sometimes,” perfectly summed up both her growth and their complicated dynamic. While Mohan’s story isn’t entirely closed, her absence in Season 3 leaves it feeling incomplete.

Before the season finale, Variety had reported that the actress would not be returning as 'Dr. Mohan', with her place being replaced by Ayesha Harris, who plays 'Dr. Parker Ellis', a night shift resident. In a recent interview with JoySauce, Supriya shared her take on what Dr. Mohan's future may look like in the ER. She said:

"I hope she goes somewhere where she has an attending that thinks she’s fit to be in the ER, maybe if Dr. Al-Hashimi [Sepideh Moafi] takes over... It’s been really interesting thinking about how different her experience of the ER might have been if she had a different attending."
Behind the scenes, however, makers say the actress's exit has been a creative, story-driven decision. Creator R. Scott Gemmill explained that cast changes are built into the DNA of the show as the series mirrors real-life ER dynamics, where residents rotate, evolve, or move on. Gemmill told Variety:
"Unfortunately, the way the medical profession works, you come in, you learn, you move on, and we want to try and be as truthful to that process as possible. So we’re going to turn over our cast. But I think it’s a great launching pad for people, and that’s the best we can do."

With Supriya herself hinting that Dr. Mohan will continue her medical journey after the break, while she isn't returning anytime soon, the possibility isn't totally lost. When asked about the possible return, Gemmill admitted, "I don’t think so… but you never know. If the storylines demand it, for sure.” Besides, both he and Noah Wyle recently shared their views about the character changes, stressing that hardly any full-time characters will remain as the story unfolds.
Speaking about Supriya's exit, Wyle admitted that he shared fans' love for her character, especially given her significant presence since the beginning of The Pitt. The actor-producer told Variety:
"It's an inevitability that’s going to happen every season with this show because, as writers, we’re hard-pressed to figure out what a lapse of time we can have and keep most of the ensemble together realistically... Supriya has been a huge part of our show since the beginning. Dr. Mohan is a beloved character, and I love playing with her and working with Supriya...we’re going to miss her."

With Dr. Samaira Mohan gone, The Pitt is expected to introduce new faces while promoting existing ones. As per Variety's report, after Dr. Mohan's exit, Dr. Parker Ellis will be promoted to a bigger role. The character, played by Ayesha Harris, was seen in a total of four episodes and also returned to season 2. Ayesha Harris has been a part of several shows, including Daisy Jones and the Six, Glamorous, This Is Us, The L Word: Generation Q, Abbott Elementary, and Good Girls.
Dr. Mohan's exit from The Pitt has been a quiet but emotional one, but the makers are not necessarily shutting the door completely. What are your thoughts on her exit?
