The literary world has lost one of its brightest and most popular voices. On December 10, 2025, one of the most celebrated authors, Madeleine Sophie Wickham, who was known by the pen name, Sophie Kinsella, tragically passed away at the age of 55. Reportedly, her family has announced the same. For those who don't know, Sophie had written books like Love Your Life, The Burnout, The Party Crasher, Shopaholic series and more. Read on to know about the cause of her death.
On December 10, 2025, Sophie Kinsella's family announced the passing away of the author, which left a lot of book-lovers heartbroken. Well, the author died after a long battle with glioblastoma. It is worth mentioning that glioblastoma is a form of brain cancer. It starts in the brain’s support cells and quickly spreads in the nearby tissues. Glioblastoma is an incurable disease, and it can't be removed by any surgery. Sophie’s daughter had shared the news on the author’s Instagram handle. An extract from her note can be read as:
"We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mummy). She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy. We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life."

For those who do not know, Sophie Kinsella was diagnosed with glioblastoma towards the end of 2022. Initially, she and her family tried to keep the news private at first. However, in April 2024, the author revealed the diagnosis to her fans. After fighting with it for such a long time, glioblastoma ultimately took her life and Sophie left for the heavenly abode on December 10, 2025. Reportedly, her family had shared that Sophie passed away peacefully surrounded by family, music and warmth.

It was on April 17, 2024, when Sophie Kinsella had taken to her Instagram handle to share her health update with her followers. She had penned a long note, in which she not only revealed about being diagnosed with glioblastoma, she also explained it. In her note, she had also thanked her family and loved ones for their support. She also sent prayers to all the cancer patients in this world. A part of her note could be read as:
"I’ve wanted for a long time to share with you a health update and I’ve been waiting for the strength to do so. At the end of 2022 I was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of aggressive brain cancer. I did not share this before because I wanted to make sure that my children were able to hear and process the news in privacy and adapt to our ‘new normal.’"

Sophie Kinsella a.k.a Madeleine Sophie Wickham was born in 1969, in London, England. She was the eldest sister among her siblings. Reportedly, her sisters also are writers. If reports are to be belived, she attended Putney High School and St Mary’s School. Later, she joined New College, Oxford. After university, she started working as a financial journalist.

Reportedly, while working as a journalist, Sophie published her first novel. Over the years, she wrote multiple bestselling books like The Tennis Party, A Desirable Residence, Swimming Pool Sunday, The Gatecrasher, The Wedding Girl, Cocktails for Three, Shopaholic series and more. Her death has left a void, which will always be felt among readers.
