Sonny Rollins Passed Away At 95, He Was Married Twice, A Look Into His Professional And Marital Life

Sonny Rollins, a tenor saxophonist who is considered jazz’s Saxophone Colossus, has died at 95. Sonny Rollins' career spanned seven decades, and throughout this time, he released 60 albums. He was born in New York. Theodore Walter Rollins grew up in Harlem, near the Apollo Theatre and Savoy Ballroom. His parents were immigrants from the Virgin Islands, while his neighbourhood was filled with music inspirations, including Coleman Hawkins.

Saxophonist, Sonny Rollins, who earned his name from his grandmother, was also inspired by his piano-playing sister and violin-playing brother and other jazz heroes. He was deeply inspired by Louis Jordan and started with the alto saxophone, but by the age of 16, he shifted to the tenor saxophone after being in awe of bebop, which is a fast and complex style of jazz. Well, it was on May 26, 2026, when Sonny Rollins passed away at his home in Woodstock, New York. His passing sparked grief around, and amid this, let's have a look at his marital life.

Sonny Rollins was married twice: Who was his first wife, Dawn Finney?

Sonny Rollins was someone who used to rely on his emotions rather than his brain, something that he himself shared. When it comes to the matter of hearts, Sonny lost his in two women. Sonny Rollins was married twice in his life. His first wife was Dawn Finney, to whom he got married in 1957, during the same time, when he was shining through his career. Sonny kept his personal life under wraps, and reportedly, his first marriage was a short-lived one and ended in a divorce. The reason for the same has never been revealed, and nothing much about Dawn is known.

Who was Sonny Rollins' second wife, Lucille Pearson?

In the same year, 1957, Sonny Rollins met his second wife, Lucille Pearson. The duo got married 10 years later in 1965, and have been together with each other for several years till 2004, before she passed away. She was not only his wife, but also his business partner. Lucille Pearson was Sonny Rollins' manager and co-produced many of his songs and albums. From producing and editing his later albums, Lucille Pearson also appeared as a percussionist. Lucille was 76 years old when she passed away at the couple's home in Germantown, New York, on November 27, 2004.

The couple's love story, although it isn't detailed in any public platform, was formed with mutual love, support and respect, as it seems. Reportedly, one of his songs, Sonny, Please, was based on his wife's famous phrase, which she often used to tell him to improve and be more enthusiastic about his career. He also reportedly used to write letters to his wife, which she kept with her, as revealed by Sonny's biographer, Aidan Levy. In several of his interviews, Sonny Rollins spoke about the impact of his wife's passing, and how he often missed her.

In a 2009 interview, on his second Christmas without his wife, Sonny Rollins was asked about how he was dealing with losing his wife. To this, he revealed that it's a part and parcel of life, and there is no denying the fact that it could often be overwhelming. He further mentioned that he and Lucille were together for a long time; however, he was just dealing with this. According to him, he would sleep in the same bed that they used to share, and while it was filled with memories, he was just dealing with it. He said:

"It can be overwhelming. We were together a long, long time. But I’m dealing with it. It’s part of life. But its [impact] certainly hasn’t waned. I’m still in the same bed; I think about it. Everything’s the same, except…well…You have certain memories. But it’s part of this existence we call life, and we have to deal with it as best possible. I guess on balance I’m not doing bad."

A look into Sonny Rollins' unstoppable career

Sonny Rollins began his career at a very young age and soon shot to fame with his unconventional path of following emotion rather than reason, and indulging this in jazz. This particular style helped him to stand out in the crowd and even achieve several Grammys throughout his career, including a Lifetime Achievement Award. Well, it was 1950 when he was a bit sidelined by drug addiction. This even got a bit more complex when he committed an armed robbery to feed this addiction. Following this, he was arrested for 10 months and was on Rikers Island in New York. He was a person with strong willpower and a positive mindset, which made him quit his addiction in 1955 by joining a rehab.

His debut album was released in 1953, and in a decaded the number of his recorded albums reached 17. Although he was someone who proved himself with his skills, he was grounded and thought that he found fame way too soon. Eventually, it led him to take frequent breaks in his career and stay away from the public limelight, during which he would hone his skills further with a stronger grasp and come back even more brightly in the public eye. His work also had a hint of spirituality when he travelled to an Indian ashram to study yoga, philosophy and meditation in 1971. The famous saxophonist retired in 2014 after he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. Speaking about the same, he once revealed in an interview:

"I’d been on this life quest to try and fulfil my potential with music, and not being able to play any more meant I wasn’t going to get a chance to do that. But I eventually came out of my depression when I realised that rather than being depressed I should be grateful. I had an opportunity to live a life as a musician, which I always wanted to do.”
