According to a report by ETimes, Sonia celebrated her 79th birthday in December 2025. It was on January 5, 2026, when she was hospitalised for a simple routine checkup. The report stated that Sonia has had a history of chronic cough and has been visiting the hospital frequently due to the high pollution in the city of Delhi. A hospital source, in an interview with PTI speaking on Sonia's health condition, revealed:

"She is doing fine and has been kept under observation of a chest physician. It is a routine admission, but she has this problem of chronic cough, and she keeps coming for checkups, especially with this pollution in the city."

The source close to the hospital told PTI that Sonia's condition is stable and that there is no cause for immediate concern. Sonia has been admitted to the hospital for a routine checkup due to high pollution levels in Delhi. Doctors at the hospital are closely monitoring the health of Sonia Gandhi, while routine assessments are also being carried out. There has been no cause of emergency reported as Sonia's health is stable and she is doing fine.

Sonia Gandhi has not yet been discharged from the hospital

The hospital source also mentioned that Sonia regularly undergoes medical checkups. One of the causes of the triggers of chronic cough is the high pollution in Delhi. The report also stated that no official bulletin has been released regarding Sonia's hospital stay, nor have her discharge plans been finalised.

Sonia was earlier diagnosed with a lower respiratory tract infection, which is reportedly caused by pneumonia or bronchitis. At Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, she was under the care of Dr. Arup Kumar Basu, who has been a senior consultant in the chest medicine department of the hospital. The doctor speaking of her earlier condition had mentioned that there was nothing to worry as it is a common problem that happens during the winter season.

How pollution caused chronic cough issue to Sonia Gandhi?

Sonia was earlier admitted to the same hospital for further treatment of the infection. The symptoms related to lower respiratory tract infection include fever, cough, weakness, breathlessness, and loss of appetite. For the unversed, according to a report by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), medical issues such as asthma along with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) occur because of inhalation of pollutants. The causes are due to fumes, dust, chemicals, pipes, and cigarettes. The report also mentioned that breathing in particle pollution can also be harmful to one's health. This is because dust from roads, farms, dry riverbeds, construction sites, and mines can irritate the eyes, nose and also throat.
