'Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen' Ending Explained: A Wedding And The Curse Of Immortality

Netflix's horror series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen premiered on March 26, 2026 (ET). Produced by the Duffer Brothers, the show is a terrifying tale of 'Rachel Harkin' and 'Nicky Cunningham', an engaged couple heading to a remote cabin for their wedding. However, their romantic getaway turns into a horrifying experience when 'Rachel' learns her family is cursed and she must marry her true soulmate, or she will die.

What's the curse in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen?

The curse is revealed in episode four of the series through a disturbing family history, after 'Rachel' watched an old video of her parents' wedding. The video showed how her mother married someone who was not her soulmate and died a horrible death soon after, warning 'Rachel' that the same fate awaited her. Her father confirms the curse and reveals it began centuries ago when a woman made a deal with death to bring her lover back to life. The condition for her wish was simple but cruel: "She had to truly believe he was her soulmate".

From that moment on, all her descendants were bound by the same rule: marry your soulmate or die. Later, a mysterious figure, 'The Witness', elaborates on the curse and reveals that he is immortal because he once failed the curse himself. He shared how long ago he fled his own wedding out of fear, causing the curse to spread into another family line, eventually reaching 'Rachel's' ancestors. Since then, the curse has continued across generations, and the only way to avoid it was to never get engaged, which, unfortunately for 'Rachel', was a train that had left the station.

Why didn't the curse kill 'Rachel'?

As the wedding inched closer, 'Rachel' seemed doomed, not fully convinced that 'Nicky' was her soulmate. She refused the magic portion that guaranteed their bond and went ahead with the ceremony, hoping love would be enough. On the other hand, 'Nicky' begins to doubt everything after learning about his parents' unhappy marriage. At the altar, he hesitates, and the ceremony collapses, triggering the curse. However, while it initially seemed that 'Rachel' was dying, she later recovered alive and unharmed.

The reason being that if someone backs out of the marriage before it is completed, the curse will spread to the other person's bloodline, while the original cursed individual becomes immortal, like 'The Witness'. With the curse transferred to 'Nicky's' family, 'The Witness' finally dies, and 'Rachel' takes his place, now immortal, doomed to watch the curse continue through future generations.

The curse follows 'Nicky's' family

Once the curse is transferred to 'Nicky's' family, chaos erupts as one after another member falls victim to the fate. 'Nicky's' mother, 'Victoria' and sister, 'Portia', both die soon after. 'Nicky' is left to witness the destruction of his family, just like others before him in the cursed lineage. However, not everyone faces the wrath of the curse, as to everyone's surprise, 'Jules' and 'Nellie' survive the hauntings. Nonetheless, a question begins to plague everyone: why did they survive the curse?

Why didn't the curse kill 'Jules' and 'Nellie' despite their toxic relationship?

'Jules' and 'Nellie' survived the curse despite their toxic, troubled relationship. The couple was even planning to divorce, which made everyone question how they had survived the curse. However, while at first glance, they seem like the least likely pair to be soulmates, the curse, too, has its mysterious ways of working. It does not require a happy or perfect relationship, but rather, just two people who are meant for each other. And despite the odds, 'Jules' and 'Nellie' seem to have that connection. The curse recognises them as soulmates and spares their lives.

The song at the end of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen also has a hidden meaning

In the final scene, while 'Rachel' drives away from the cabin, the song, We Will Not Be Lovers by The Waterboys echoes in the background. The song's lyrics describe a relationship doomed from the beginning, mirroring 'Rachel' and 'Nicky's' failed romance. While 'Rachel' attempts to change the song, it keeps replaying, symbolising that some outcomes cannot be escaped. A wounded fox also appears in the scene, finally leaving the area, reflecting 'Nicky's' inability to deal with difficult realities, including his avoidance towards problems, whether in relationships or life. 'Rachel', on the other hand, accepts her fate and throws her wedding ring, stepping into her new life as an immortal.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen delivered a dark message about love and destiny, while challenging the idea of a perfect relationship. It rattles the notion that love alone is not enough to escape fate, with 'Rachel' paying the ultimate cost as she must now live forever, watching others face the same impossible choice: find your soulmate or pay the ultimate price.
