Smriti married her friend (Mona’s) ex-husband, Zubin in 2001. Speaking about the same in an interview, Smriti had shared, “I married Zubin because I needed him. I was consulting him, talking to him and meeting him every day. So we said why not marry and be best friends as well as a married couple. Both my parents and his agreed to our marriage and blessed us. I would never dream of marrying against the wishes of my parents because I believe strongly that hurting parents causes unhappiness and destruction for the couple." The former actress is always praises for her hubby, Zubin. Speaking about him, she was quoted as saying in a 2010 interview with The Telegraph, “From Zubin I learnt patience, forgiveness. I learnt to be single-minded in my determination. When I had my first child, I wanted to give up working. He said, ‘Have I given up because I have had a child? Why should you?’ Every woman should be lucky enough to marry a man like Zubin. I don’t know why I gloat about it, but I am lucky. My stability-taking what comes my way with a pinch of salt and a smile-comes from my husband.”

In a throwback 2005 interview with Rediff.com, Smriti spoke about home and relationships and stated, “Home is where the heart is, and so is family. I think in today's day and age, it doesn't matter whether your family is joint or nuclear. What matters is how important are relationships for you, and to what length would you go to maintain them. I think the idea is to give respect to your elders and those who are younger than you, but to stand your ground firmly when it comes to issues close to your heart. Jhukne se insaan chhota nahin hota, lekin logon ko bhi saavdhani barakhni chaahiye that humility and respect need not necessarily mean weakness. So love your mother-in-law, but never compromise on self-respect!”

Even though Smriti is a former Education Minister, the MP and her husband were grilled by a school who evaluated them before admitting their children to school. Speaking about the same in a 2014 interview, she was quoted as saying, “Oh yes. I actually got interviewed. When I came from Mumbai to Delhi, the first one month, I tried to work a balance between work and home. I just could not because I barely had six hours to go to Mumbai. I have two young kids, one is 11-year-old and the other is 13-year-old. For me it was difficult and I said come to Delhi and, mercifully, they listened. It was a difficult shift because my family never lived here and the first thing we did before we came is to give an interview as parents--got grilled by teachers and principal and then the children were grilled.” She had further added, “I think processes should not differ just because you are a minister. This is a job, a responsibility, not a right to override the processes that every citizen goes through. So I gave an interview with my husband, got evaluated."
