Smita Patil's close friend, Aruna Raje, recalls the fateful night when the actress breathed her last

In a recent interview with ETimes, Smita Patil’s close friend, Aruna Raje, recalled the fateful night when she breathed her last. Aruna shared that it was around 3 am on that night when Smita Patil’s mom, Vidyatai Patil’s driver, came to her house in Pedder Road, South Mumbai, to inform her about the actress' critical condition. Smita was admitted to Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai. Aruna quickly went and joined Vidyatai at the hospital. Aruna added that Smita’s mom was broken, but she had to remain composed for the sake of Smita’s newborn child, Prateik. Aruna was quoted as saying:

"It was around 3 am on that fateful December night when Maa's driver came to my house and told me that Smita was critical and had been shifted to Jaslok Hospital. My house was just two minutes away on Pedder Road. I quickly went and joined Maa at the hospital. I saw Smita in a condition that I cannot describe. I knew she had left us forever, and nothing would bring her back. Maa was broken, but she had to compose herself for the sake of the newborn Prateik."

During the same interview, Aruna revealed that after Smita’s demise, her mother, Vidyatai, gave her the actress’s letters and notes for safekeeping. While going through the notes and letters, Aruna understood that those were deeply personal. Aruna mentioned that Smita was madly in love with Raj and kind of obsessed with him. She even observed Karwa Chauth vrat for her husband, Raj, when she was seven months pregnant with Prateik and was advised against it. Aruna was quoted as saying:

"After her demise, Maa gave me Smita's letters and notes for safekeeping, to check what was of use and what was not. Later, I handed them over to Smita's sister Anita. Glancing through them, I realised they were deeply personal. She was madly in love with Raj, almost to the point of obsession. She had even observed the Karwa Chauth vrat for Raj, even though she was seven months pregnant and had been advised against it."

Aruna Raje shares that Smita Patil's family and friends distanced themselves after she chose Raj Babbar

Further in the interview, Aruna shared that Smita had fallen in love with Raj, and she made a choice to be with him. Raj was married when he began his relationship with Smita. Aruna mentioned that due to Smita’s connection with Raj, her family and friends distanced themselves from her. Aruna stated that Smita became very lonely, and it was she who remained in touch with her. Aruna was quoted as saying:

"Smita had fallen in love with Raj. She made a choice to be with him. He had not forced himself on her; he had courted her relentlessly. Her undoing was losing herself in love. Love is not only blind; it can also be self-destructive. It was hard for Smita because her heart and mind were in conflict. She was also very, very alone. I was the only one who remained in touch with her, as her friends and family had distanced themselves. I became her sounding board, and she would share the bitter, difficult parts of her life with me."
