Sherrone Moore's Salary As Michegan Coach Was In Millions, Will He Receive USD 13 Million As Buyout?

Sherrone Moore has found himself capturing all the media headlines, but not for a good cause. On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, the Michigan head coach's tenure came to an abrupt end after he was fired. For those still unaware, the reason for his termination was that an internal investigation found evidence that he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. However, even with his career currently in shambles, Sherrone could still earn millions. Here's everything we know.

What was Sherrone Moore's salary?

With news of Sherrone Moore being fired from his position as the University of Michigan's head coach all over the internet, have you ever wondered what his salary was during his tenure? According to a USA Today report, his salary amounted to a whopping USD 6.11 million. The number is so astonishing that it makes him the 40th most top-paid college football coach out there. If he were to have a buyout, as per CBS News, his "buyout was listed at USD 13.89 million. That number is the second-lowest among all listed coaches from the Big Ten."

Will the University of Michigan have to pay Sherrone Moore the full buyout?

As things currently stand, given the way Sherrone was ousted from his position as head coach, it is still unclear whether he will be able to secure the full buyout amount. The chances of him not getting the buyout are much higher, given that he was also detained by the police after being fired. According to a CBS News report:

“Michigan could be off the hook for some (or all) of his buyout, though cases like this have ended in court battles in the past.”

CBS News also reported that if the ex-coach had not been fired from his job, he would have stood to make much more money. Allegedly, Sherrone's contract with the university was set to pay him USD 5.5 million in base salary. Additionally, he was going to be compensated annually throughout the 2029 season, with a reported retention bonus of USD 500,000 for each season he stayed as coach.

Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges.”

More about Sherrone Moore's termination as head coach

Sherrone became the coach at Michigan only a couple of years earlier, at the end of the 2023 season. This was after the university's former coach, Jim Harbaugh, departed to coach the Los Angeles Chargers. Sherrone had been a part of the University of Michigan's staff even before this, when he was hired as the tight end coach in 2018. As of now, Sherrone is the fourth coach from the Big Ten to be fired. Before him, coaches DeShaun Foster (UCLA), James Franklin (Penn State), and Jonathan Smith (Michigan State) were also fired. After his termination, Michigan athletic director, Warde Manuel said in a statement:

"Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a university investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior."
