Martin Short is dealing with a difficult phase. For the unversed, in February 2026, the much-loved and respected actor lost his daughter, Katherine, due to duicide. She was 42 years old when she took her life. Months later, Martin Short came forward and called the entire incident a nightmare. Amid this, an insider recently spoke about Martin’s condition and revealed that singer-and-actress, Selena Gomez has been his biggest strength in such difficult times.

After nearly three months of Katherine’s unexpected death, her father, Martin Short has returned to work, showing his bravery and commitment to work. As per reports, Martin Short has officially returned to shoot the blockbuster show, Only Murders In The Building. Amid that, a source close to Martin, opened up about the actor’s bond with Selena Gomez and revealed that the Who Says singer has been protecting him ever since Katherine’s demise. The insider was quoted as saying:

"Selena is continuing to be incredibly protective and supportive of Martin. She's really been there for Martin every step of the way. People don't realize how close Martin and Selena have become over the last few years. They have each other's backs."

Selena Gomez has always showered love on Martin Short

For those who do not know, Selena Gomez has often showered love on Martin Short and has given multiple signals that she is his true friend. Over the years, Selena has always promoted Martin’s projects and stood by him during his tough times. Recently, when Martin Short’s documentary was released, Selena Gomez took to her Instagram Stories to describe the actor as ‘legendary’. Her heartfelt note could be read as:

"This man who doesn’t have social media is truly outstandingly witty, smart and has given the most wonderful attributes to our world of comedy. Some may not know much that follow me. But Martin Short is nothing short of a legend. His outlook on life is simply joyful. I cried, laughed and empathised his entire story. Check it out on Netflix now please. Worth every minute. When Martin Short opened up about his daughter’s death

A few weeks ago, in May 2026, Martin Short sat down for his first interview after his daughter, Katherine’s unexpected suicide. During the chat, Martin recalled his wife’s death as well. He also mentioned that his wife and his daughter’s last words were similar as they asked him to let them go. Martin Short was quoted as saying:

"You know, it's been a nightmare for the family. But the understanding [is] that mental health and cancer, like my wife, are both diseases, and sometimes with diseases they are terminal. And my daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she could until she couldn't. So, Nan's last words to me were: 'Martin, let me go.' And what she [Katherine] was just saying was, 'Dad, let me go'."
