Truth behind Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato’s friendship revealed after their shocking reunion
It did not take long for Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato's surprise reunion for the Rare Beauty campaign to completely go viral. However, those who were thinking that the two are still best friends after all these years might be a bit disappointed. According to reports, instead of a BFF reunion, things between Selena and Demi were supposedly strictly business.
Speaking with Page Six, a source claimed that at present, Selena and Demi have only patched things up to a point where they appear to be in a better place. But compared to when they were teens, they are no longer that close. The source was quoted as saying:
“Demi and Selena are not best friends. They’ve patched things up enough to be in a better place. They will never be as close as they once were.”
Demi and Selena successfully sent their fans into a frenzy when they shared a throwback photo from 2009. For those who missed it, the pair recreated the poster of their Disney movie Princess Protection Program. They also revived their infamous webcam vlogs from back in the day for the Lose You To Love Me singer’s beauty line.
Additionally, even though Selena and Demi’s collaboration looked like an effortless hangout between two best friends, the source revealed that the duo is far from inseparable. Not only that, neither Selena nor Demi first thought of the idea for their reunion.
Reports reveal that the whole idea came from Tyra Booker, who serves as Rare Beauty's Assistant Vice President of Integrated Marketing. She revealed on LinkedIn that she first pitched the concept during her very first week at the company. While crediting the Rare Beauty team for giving her the creative freedom to bring the idea to life, Tyra wrote:
“With over 500M+ views across every platform, it’s proved to be more than a beauty campaign but a cultural moment.”
According to Tyra, she was inspired by Selena and Demi Lovato's friendship from their Disney era for the campaign. She revealed that she had grown up watching them on YouTube and wanted to tap into that nostalgia.

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato first met as children, when they were only seven years old. At the time, they appeared together on Barney & Friends. They became closer while acting on Disney. Their relationship eventually cooled off, and they barely interacted with each other.
During a 2020 interview, Demi confessed that she and Selena Gomez were no longer friends. However, she said that she would always have love in her heart for the singer. She added:
“When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her…I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”
Demi and Selena’s respective weddings in 2025 further highlighted the distance that had formed between the pop stars. Fans couldn't help but notice that neither of them attended each other's big day.
But more recently, in addition to their campaign, Demi and Selena have made strides towards reconnecting. Selena was spotted attending the opening night of Demi’s tour in Orlando in April 2026. The pair was also photographed together backstage.
