Scott Pelley has become a popular face over the years with his frequent appearances on television. While he is known to everyone for being associated with CBS Evening News for six years, the author and reporter is popular among the public for his work as the correspondent for 60 Minutes. Notably, his recent removal from the news magazine broadcast has started to create headlines for various reasons. Netizens have been eager to know the reasons behind his firing. Keep reading to know more!

Scott Pelley’s firing from 60 Minutes was the result of a dispute with Nick Bilton, the executive producer of the show. Notably, the alleged conflict happened during a staff meeting involving the people who are working on the show. The meeting was intended to introduce Nick to everyone. Bilton was reportedly appointed by Bari Weiss, the Editor-in-Chief for CBS News.
According to NBC News, Bari and the employees of 60 Minutes have allegedly been having issues with each other for some time due to the editorial direction selected for the show. The new direction has been a result of the Paramount Skydance merger. During the meeting, Scott Pelley reportedly attacked Nick Bilton, as per an alleged audio recording and an insider who was present at the meeting.

Nick Bilton was speaking at the staff meeting, saying that Bari Weiss loves the “institution.” However, Scott Pelley reportedly interfered, seemingly claiming that Bari Weiss has been killing 60 Minutes every day. Scott spoke to Nick about the removal of certain officials, including correspondent, Sharyn Alfonsi. Bilton then stated that the firings happened before he became a part of the show. Scott Pelley even questioned Nick Bilton about the reasons for which he joined the show. Scott claimed that Nick will not be welcomed in the place. Bilton replied by saying:
“I don’t believe that will be the case. I have been a journalist for 25 years, Scott. I have sat and talked with incredibly powerful people like you have. None of it intimidates me, OK?”

Nick Bilton said in Scott Pelley’s termination letter that his behaviour in front of the staff members, instead of opting for a private conversation, proves that he does not have any interest in contributing to the success of the show. Saying that he has been terminated, Nick also wrote in the letter that Scott’s “antipathy” to the future of 60 Minutes is now clear to everyone.
Scott Pelley worked at CBS News for almost 37 years. His salary was reportedly around USD 7 million when he was working at the place, as per The Sunday Guardian. Back in 2014, his earnings were reported to be USD 5 million per year. This was lower in comparison to others like Diane Sawyer and Brian Williams, following which Scott was seeking a rise in earnings.
After being fired from CBS News, Scott Pelley shared a lengthy statement, saying that 60 Minutes did not remain what it was after the senior leadership witnessed a change alongside the removal of two correspondents. Pelley alleged that good people were not allowed to speak because they were always fair and always took a stand for the viewers. He further stated:
“For my part, new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story. I’ve been told to include assertions that are unverified. To date, in every case, I have managed to ignore these instructions or refuse them. Recently, politicians have been invited to choose correspondents for interviews on the broadcast. Giving politicians control over 60 Minutes interviews is not how this is done.”
