Savannah Guthrie was just about to co-host the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy, when her mother, Nancy Guthrie, was reported missing. It has been over 72 hours since the 84-year-old went missing from her home in Pima County, Arizona, and investigators now suspect an abduction in play. The family has raised concerns about Nancy's physical health, as she has been under medication for some age-related ailments that require timely medication, and her condition may even prove fatal if not found soon. New details from police reports indicate that Nancy's pacemaker had stopped syncing with her Apple Watch in the hours before she went missing.
According to police filings, Nancy went missing on Saturday, January 31, 2026, and her last known location was at her home in the Catalina Foothills, near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue, where she was seen around 9:30 PM local time. It wasn't until hours later, on February 1, that her family realised she was missing, after she failed to show up for Sunday church and could not be found at her home.

As the county sheriff became involved in the investigation, the Guthrie family raised urgent concerns about the elderly woman’s fragile physical health, which grows more at risk with every passing minute.

Amid the ongoing search, PEOPLE has obtained dispatch audio recordings from the Pima County Sheriff's office, which show that Nancy, 84, suffers from cardiac issues and uses a pacemaker, and she also has high blood pressure. Her reported timing of disappearance was noted as "2200 hours as of yesterday."

According to a Law enforcement update to Fox News, Nancy has an implanted pacemaker that normally syncs with her Apple Watch. However, in the early hours of January 31, 2026, around 2:00 AM, there was a synchronisation problem: the medical device lost contact with Nancy's Apple Watch. When the search party arrived, they found Nancy's phone and watch inside her house. The watch was still plugged to a charger. For someone whose health largely depends on timely medication and monitoring, the new report has sparked grave concerns about her health.

The Guthrie family initially told NBC that Nancy’s disappearance was being treated as a missing persons case, saying, “We can confirm this is a missing persons case, and the family is working closely with local law enforcement.” However, authorities reportedly uncovered troubling evidence when they arrived at the 84-year-old's home. New reports suggest investigators found blood and signs of forced entry, prompting them to believe the case may involve an abduction. DNA testing is expected to determine whether the blood is Nancy’s.

Homicide detectives are now involved in the investigation, and the possibility of foul play has not been ruled out. There has been an active search for Nancy Guthrie, and the efforts reportedly include drones, helicopters, infrared technology, and assistance from the U.S. Border Patrol. The FBI is also reported to be aiding the investigation.
Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie has stepped away from Today and was not seen on the Monday morning episode. She has also officially withdrawn from hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony on February 6, 2026. An NBC spokesperson announced on her behalf on February 3, 2026:
“Savannah will not be joining us at the Olympics as she focuses on being with her family during this difficult time. Our hearts are with her and the entire Guthrie family as the search continues for their mother. We will share additional information about our Opening Ceremony coverage plans soon.”
