Sara was reportedly found dead in her Oklahoma home on Thursday, July 23, 2026. Amid this, her ex-husband is now detailing how their son narrowly escaped the murder-suicide.
Sara Gilson's ex-husband, Lyle Landers says his son did not see his mom being shot
Sara Gilson shared two children with her ex-husband, Lyle Landers. During an interview with TMZ, Lyle revealed that their son, who was present in the house when Sara was killed, had heard the gunfire that claimed his mother's life as he ran for help. However, he clarified that he did not see the murder happen with his own eyes.
According to Lyle, their son had been playing computer games in another room when he first heard the noises outside. As he walked into the entryway to check out what was happening, he noticed Sara and Shawn standing in the kitchen, with the latter allegedly holding a gun.
At this point, Shawn told the boy, “You need to leave.” Before he could do that, Sara, who had realized the gravity of the situation, instructed her son to quickly run away and call 911.
Lyle claimed that his son was super frightened, but he managed to run to a neighbor’s house. When nobody answered the door, he decided to head toward the home of a state trooper who lived a couple of houses away. As he was running, Lyle said that his son heard the gunshot behind him but still kept going.
Once the boy reached another neighbor’s home, which was a block away, he called his father. Lyle confessed that receiving a call from his son “scared me to death.” He recalled that he asked the child where he was.
Once he learned that his son was safe, he instructed him not to return home as he could not figure out what took place there. Since he lives only four miles away from Sara’s house, Kyle quickly drove there, while praying that things did not end up the way that they ultimately did. He said:
“I was praying maybe he just committed suicide in front of her to torture her. I never thought it would go to this extent.”
Sara Gilson and Lyle Landers remained super close despite their divorce
As per reports, Lyle Landers and Sara Gilson got divorced seven years ago. Despite this, they remained extremely close and maintained a friendship. They shared custody of their two children in a flexible arrangement. Lyle revealed that with him being a full-time firefighter, his children would regularly move back and forth between their homes as per his work schedule. He also claimed that he would speak to Sara every day.
According to him, in the past few weeks leading up to Sara Gilson’s death, the influencer would often talk to him about the worries that she had with Shawn. She told him that she no longer trusted her husband and was worried that he could “go off the deep end.” Sara also told Lyle that it would be better for their kids to live with him full time. After Sara’s tragic death, Lyle paid a tribute to her in a Facebook post. He wrote:
"Sara was a fun, life of the party girl, who loved her kids fiercely and would fight to the death for them. We did our best to always keep things comfortable and the same for our children, even though we weren't together anymore."
