The actor, whose career spanned five decades, bid farewell to the world on July 13, 2026, and he was revealed to be cancer-free at the time of his death.
For those who don't know, Sam Neill was diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, in 2022, and he revealed the same the next year in 2023. However, his family recently confirmed that the actor's passing was not due to his disease; rather, it was unexpected. It was only three months back when Sam Neill announced to the media about being cancer free after undergoing CAR-T cell therapy. His passing has moved the entire Hollywood, and his fans have been mourning the legendary actor's demise.
Sam Neill was floored with an emotional question during his cancer battle
Amid this, let's have a look at the time when the legendary actor couldn't hold back his tears when he was asked a simple question during an interview. Sam Neill, throughout his career, never had such an emotional moment over a simple question; however, it was in 2024 when he appeared as a guest on the premiere of ABC’s series, The Assembly. In this series, high-profile stars appeared to Australian University students and answered their questions.
When Sam Neill was there, one of the students asked him a simple question that floored him, totally. Sam was asked what was the biggest lesson he had learnt from his parents. Sam took a moment and said, 'Wow,' as he remained moved by the simple yet amazing question, and he was seen visibly emotional. To mention, Sam Neill was born to Demott Neill and Priscilla Beatrice Ingham.
Coming back to the interview, while Sam was moved by the question and welled up, he had a beautiful reply to give. Sharing the biggest lesson that he had learnt from his mother, Sam recalled that during his university days, he was busy with acting and personal life, and didn't have the time to read, which left him anxious just before the exam.
It was during that time that Sam's mom reassured him by saying that he would have to pull himself up, and, according to the legendary actor, that was the best lesson he had gotten. To quote Sam Neill:
"And I’d done a year of university and I’d done bugger all. I was acting in plays and trying to find a girlfriend, you know … so it came to exam time and I realised I’d done almost no work. It got me very anxious. Anyway, I got home and Mum said, ‘How are you, darling?’ and I said, ‘I think I’m having a breakdown, I’ve got exams in a couple of weeks …’ and she just looked at me and said, ‘Well, you’re just going to have to pull yourself together’. And I think that’s the best lesson I learned from her. Sometimes you just have to pull yourself together. It’s a tough lesson, but a good one – and thank you for that question."

For the unversed, Sam Neill's dad, Demott, was a military officer in the British Army. During the time that Sam was born, Demott was in Northern Ireland and was serving as an officer with the Royal Irish Fusiliers. It was in 1954 that he retired and became a businessman by taking over Neill & Co. Speaking of Sam's mother, she was a homemaker; however, she was also an equestrian and jockey.
