Actor Sam Neill, popular for his role in the Jurassic Park franchise, bid farewell to the world on July 13, 2026. He recently announced himself as cancer-free; however, three months after his announcement, the actor passed away at the age of 78. His family confirmed the news of his sudden death as ‘unexpected’ but ruled out cancer as the reason behind it.

Sam Neill’s cause of death revealed

Sam Neill’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople co-star Rima Te Wiata recently revealed that the 78-year-old actor contracted pneumonia before his death. Rima spoke to the New Zealand Herald and revealed that Neill had a significantly weekend immune system. Speaking about the same, she said:

“I think he would be like: ‘For goodness sake, I got over my cancer. And now look, now I get pneumonia. What next?’ He's on his big journey now.”

Not just this, Sam’s ex-partner, Australian journalist Laura Tingle, told ABC Radio Sydney that the actor had been ‘sick’ before his death. She stated that Neill had been battling various forms of cancer for at least the last five years, intensively and his body was very weak. Laura also stated that though the actor was cancer free but after continuous chemo and a lot of immunotherapies made his immune system weak and his body was exhausted.

Sam Neil’s battle with stage-three blood cancer

Sam was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, and he detailed it in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This? The veteran actor first revealed that he was being treated for stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma in 2023. He revealed taking a new chemotherapy drug monthly to keep the cancer at bay. Talking about the same to the Guardian, he shared:

“I’ve been living with a particular type of lymphoma for about five years and I was on chemotherapy, [which is] pretty miserable business but it was keeping me alive.”

The actor revealed how he learned about it and shared that the shocking news came when he noticed swollen glands during a press conference for Jurassic World Dominion in Los Angeles. In his cancer memoir interview, Neill spoke about not being able to recognise himself during the chemotherapy. The actor recalled looking in the mirror and seeing himself as a completely different person, with no hair on his head, no eyelashes, and a falling beard on a hospital pillow.

After the chemotherapy stopped working on him, another expensive drug was proposed. While taking the CAR T-cell therapy every month, Neill was announced cancer-free as the treatment worked for him. Speaking about being cancer-free, he shared:

“I’m not off the hook as such, but there’s no cancer in my body. I’ve never felt so well or so happy in my life; it was fabulous to taste everything. The wine was glorious, and the food was superb. I swam every day down in my dam, and it was the most marvellous time … I had my family and all the grandchildren. It was just fantastic.”

He also spoke about the immunotherapy which he underwent as part of a clinical trial, to be rolled out for blood cancer patients across Australia. But destiny had other plans for Sam as the actor bid adieu to the world on July 13, 2026 after he gave a tough fight to cancer and its side-effects.

It is not sure whether pneumonia was the reason behind Sam Neill's death. An official confirmation from his family is still awaited.
