Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai’s love affair was one of the most interesting and talked about gossips back in the days in Indian cinema. The duo fell in love while working for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s grand film, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and were quite serious about their relationship. However, their bliss was of a short while, and it was Salman’s alleged abusive behaviour that led to their eventual breakup. Fast forward to now, while Aishwarya has moved on in her life and is happily married to Abhishek Bachchan, Salman, on the other hand, continues to remain a bachelor at the age of 58.
In one of his previous tell-all interactions with Rajat Sharma on the show, Aap Ki Adalat, Salman Khan opened up about his often talked-about love affair with Aishwarya Rai. The actor was asked about being continually linked with his ex-ladylove, while she has gracefully moved on in her life. To this, Salman gave a very beautiful response, expressing a sense of gratitude and satisfaction on Aishwarya moving on and getting married to a great person like Abhishek Bachchan. He said:
“So many years have gone by. She’s somebody’s wife and I am very happy that she is married to Abhishek. I think Abhishek is a great guy and (she) married to a great family and they are very happy together. This is the best thing that any ex-boyfriend would want.”

While Salman Khan has never crossed paths with his ex-girlfriend, Aishwarya Rai after their breakup, he continues to maintain an amicable equation with her husband, Abhishek Bachchan, as they are often seen interacting with one another in events. However, back in the days in 2007, Salman Khan had conveyed a special message to his former ladylove, after she married Abhishek Bachchan. In one of his interactions with a leading daily, the actor had remarked:
“I am very happy she is married to Abhishek. He is a great guy from a good family. The best thing I can want for her is that she leads a happy life.”
One of the primary reasons behind Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan’s breakup was the latter’s highly alcoholic and abusive nature towards the former, which she couldn’t bear to suffer any longer. In many of her older revelations, Aishwarya had openly cited the reasons for which she parted ways with Salman. However, the actor, on the contrary, had a very different take on it. In one of his older interviews with NDTV, Salman had openly countered all such claims and mentioned:
“Now, the woman has said that I have, what to say. A journalist, who asked me this a long time ago and I just banged the table and he got startled if the table really broke. I said, ‘Now if I hit somebody, it’s obviously going to be a fight. I’m going to be angry. Forget whack, I’m going to give her my best shot. I don’t think she’ll survive it. So no, it’s not true and I don’t know for what reason that was said.”

After staying mum about it for the longest, it was back in 2002 when Aishwarya Rai had, for the first time, talked about her breakup with Salman Khan. She openly revealed being continually at the receiving end of Salman’s abusive behaviour, as a result of which she would often become a victim of brutal physical violence. In her words:
“I stood by him enduring his alcoholic misbehaviour in its worst phases and in turn I was at the receiving end of his abuse (verbal, physical and emotional), infidelity and indignity. I would go to work as if nothing had happened. Salman hounded me and caused physical injuries to himself when I refused to take his calls. That is why like any other self-respecting woman, I ended my relationship with him.”
