It unfolded after his ex-girlfriend, Jazzma Kendrick, shared an Instagram story with a picture of bruises left after he hit her. Now, the 50-year-old rapper is facing one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery. However, he has denied the allegations and entered a not-guilty plea.
Why did Rick Ross and Jazzma Kendrick break up?
Rick Ross and Jazzma Kendrick were in an on-and-off relationship that became public in 2025. They often attended events together and even stepped together on the red carpet of the BET Awards. However, their relationship seemingly ended in late September 2026. At the time, Jazzma shared a series of posts on social media. Through the post, she alleged that the 50-year-old had physically abused her. In fact, she also shared some photos to show her injury, a swollen lip, with the text, "the day Rick busted my lip and the day I left."
Jazzma shared another post to reply to a text by a follower who complimented her appearance and penned, "Rick saw a punching bag." She also encouraged other women who face similar situations to leave their abusive relationships. The real estate agent also mentioned that if a man hits someone once, he may do it again.
Moreover, Jazzma Kendrick later hinted that the alleged incident took place about a month ago. According to her posts, she decided to leave the relationship after he physically harmed her. Now, she is focused on moving ahead with her life. Meanwhile, Rick did not publicly address Jazzma's specific claims, but his attorney claims that he is innocent.
After Jazzma's post created a stir, the rapper surrendered himself to authorities on September 1, 2026. As per reports, the rapper's ex-girlfriend told police that Rick became angry when he saw a social media post where she was tagged.
As per the court documents, she claims that Rick struck her multiple times and grabbed her by the hair. Then he pushed her against a wall and choked her to the point that she found it difficult to breathe. It led to felony and misdemeanor charges being filed. After being booked, Rick entered a not-guilty plea and was released on bond. As per his attorney:
"William Roberts II, professionally known as Rick Ross, is being wrongfully accused by an ex-girlfriend whose true motivations are unclear."
What can happen next in Rick Ross' domestic violence case?
The next step in the matter would be Rick Ross' arraignment hearing, which is scheduled for October 22, 2026. During that hearing, the charges against the rapper will be formally read in court. In fact, his not-guilty plea will be entered into the official record. At the same time, the rapper has placed a request for a jury trial. This means the case may eventually be decided by jurors if it proceeds to trial.
However, before that happens, the prosecutors and defense attorneys will step into the discovery phase. During this phase, they will exchange evidence related to the case. It will include police reports, witness statements, medical records, photos, and digital evidence. It is significant to note that the felony battery by strangulation charge is the most serious among others. In turn, there would be serious legal consequences if it were proved.
