Raul Malo had made a name for himself in the country music genre. As the lead singer of the band, The Mavericks, he was a well-known figure among country music fans. Hence, Raul's shocking death at the age of 60 has left his fans and family in mourning. The singer passed away on December 8, 2025. Nearly a week before his tragic demise, Raul's wife, Betty Malo had shared about the 'hell' they were living in. So, here's what we know about the cause of death of Raul Malo.

The Mavericks band took to their social media handle to announce that their lead singer, Raul Malo, passed away on December 8, 2025, at the age of 60. The extensive note detailed Raul's professional body of work. The band shared about his creative genius and how the lead singer's music skills had earned him many awards, including a Grammy. Apart from Raul, the band comprises Paul Deakin, Eddie Perez, and Jerry Dale McFadden. An excerpt from their statement read:

"Anyone with the pleasure of being in Raul’s orbit knew that he was a force of human nature, with an infectious energy. Over a career of more than three decades entertaining millions around the globe, his towering creative contributions and unrivaled, generational talent created the kind of multicultural American music reaching far beyond America itself."

What was the cause of Raul Malo's death? What we know about his Leptomeningeal Disease diagnosis

Before his death, Raul Malo had disclosed that he was suffering from colon cancer in 2024. However, the musician had not given up on his passion, despite his battle with cancer. The Mavericks had continued with their tours until Raul was diagnosed with Leptomeningeal Disease in September 2025. For the unversed, LMD occurs when the cancer cells spread from the source region to the leptomeninges, affecting the brain and spinal cord and leading to neurological issues. Raul Malo passed away at the age of 60 after a nearly year-long battle with cancer. 

Raul Malo's family life and his wife, Betty's, last health update before his death 

Raul Malo and his wife, Betty, were married for 34 years, and she was with him throughout his cancer battle. The late musician and his wife also share three sons, Dino, Victor, and Max. Raul is survived by his wife, children, mother, Norma, and sister, Carol. Nearly a week before his demise, Betty had shared a video of their family opening fan mail. She wrote that these letters from fans have been giving them strength through the 'hell' that they were living in amid Raul's cancer battle. Betty penned:
