Mystikal sentenced to 20 years in prison

On June 16, 2026 (ET), Mystikal, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for third-degree rape, a reduced charge to which he pleaded guilty in March 2026, according to ABC affiliate WBRZ and Louisiana First News. The rapper pleaded guilty to the charges in March 2026. However, just a few days before his sentencing, his lawyer filed a motion on June 12, 2026 (ET), asking to withdraw his plea as he "did not have sufficient opportunity to fully consider the consequences" of his plea deal before agreeing to it, according to WBRZ.

What are the charges on Mystikal?

Mystikal has been convicted in connection with an incident that occurred in August 2022. The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said in a press release that an individual was hospitalised in relation to minor injuries sustained during a sexual assault allegedly involving Tyler. The victim was reportedly an acquaintance and was punched and choked by Tyler after he accused her of stealing money from him. He found drugs in the residence during the altercation and alleged that Tyler was having mood swings before the rape occurred. For the unversed, the rapper is a registered sex offender due to a 2003 sexual assault conviction and has spent six years in federal prison.

With Mystikal's conviction, netizens have grown interested in the rapper's personal life. While much of his recent personal life has been nonexistent since his arrest in July 2022, his prior relationship with ex-girlfriend, Karrine Steffans has now gained everyone's attention. According to reports, Karrine was born on August 24, 1978, in Saint Thomas, and her family moved to Florida when she was 10. However, despite the move and the new start, she was the victim of abuse and poverty, with her mother being an alcoholic and her father being completely indifferent.

As she grew older, things only got worse, as Karrine was raped by an unknown man for three days at the age of 13. These experiences pushed her to leave home at the age of 16, but the incidents had done enough damage to change her views on life. After leaving home, she worked as an exotic dancer to support herself and met rapper, Nathaniel Wilson, also known by the stage name Kool G Rap. They had a son, Naim Wilson, when she was just 17 years old. She stayed with Wilson for five years before leaving him due to domestic abuse.

Karrine Steffans' rise to fame as the Video Vixen

After her split from Naim, Karrine struggled to raise her son while attending college at the University of Arizona. However, she graduated with a degree in English and Creative Writing in 2000. While her early years were filled with struggles, she finally rose to success through her controversial relationships and by writing a book, Confessions of a Video Vixen, in 2005, about her encounters. While being a model in videos made her a recognisable face, she had intimate relationships to secure parts in music videos, according to her book. After the success of her book, she published more books that got popular as the Vixen series, coaching women about sex and sexuality. 

Karrine Steffans' relationship with Mystikal

Karrine and Mystikal's relationship was short-lived and allegedly started and ended with the making of his music video for Danger in 2000. This was because of Karrine's past of abuse and Mystikal's run-ins with the cops. However, while her relationship with the rapper didn't evolve, she did give love another chance and even got married twice, first to Darius McCreary in 2009, but they got divorced in 2011. She got married to a man named Damien, who was allegedly the reason for her first divorce as well.

Karrine Steffans changed her name to Elisabeth Ovesen

In recent years, Karrine made a shocking decision, changing her name to Elisabeth Ovesen. She revealed that she changed her name to own her story, and while they were the same person, this identity was purely hers.
