Randolph Mantooth, the beloved actor who became a television icon as firefighter-paramedic 'Johnny Gage' on Emergency!, has died at the age of 80. The veteran star passed away on July 9, 2026, at a hospice facility in Ventura, California, after a prolonged battle with multiple cancers.

As fans remember the actor who inspired generations of paramedics in America, many are now looking back at the family he leaves behind, including his wife and siblings.

Inside Randolph Mantooth's two marriages

At the time of his death, Randolph Mantooth was married to his longtime partner, actress Kristen Connors. The couple tied the knot on August 10, 2002, and remained together for nearly 24 years until Mantooth's passing. While the couple largely kept their relationship out of the spotlight, they occasionally worked together in front of the camera, including an appearance in the 2009 comedy, Scream of the Bikini.

Kristen remained by Mantooth's side throughout his later years as he battled cancer and several other health complications. But before her, the actor had been married to actress Rose Parra, best known for her role in High Stakes (1989).

Randolph met Rose during his career's first breakthrough. The pair exchanged vows on July 1, 1978, during the height of Mantooth's Emergency! fame. Their marriage lasted more than a decade, but it eventually ended in divorce in 1991. The actor didn't get romantically involved for years after the split.

More than a decade later, Mantooth found love again with Kristen Connors, and this time, the marriage lasted until his death. Despite his decades-long marriage, there are no public records available regarding Randolph's children with either of his wives, so it seems he didn't have any. He is survived by Kristen Connors, his brother Donald Mantooth, his sister Tonya Mantooth, along with several nieces and nephews. Tonya also built a career in entertainment as a producer, while Donald pursued acting.

What was Randolph Mantooth's cause of death?

Mantooth's brother, Donald Mantooth, says that there was not a single factor behind his demise, as the actor had been battling a variety of cancers for years. Speaking to TMZ, Donald revealed that Randolph's years-long health battle began with throat cancer, and he developed additional forms of cancer over time.

"He had been sick for several years with a variety of cancers, starting with throat cancer," Donald said, adding that his brother "battled them as best he could," but the illnesses eventually took too great a toll on his body.

Although Mantooth kept much of his personal life private, those closest to him often described him as deeply devoted to his family and friends. After his passing, Mantooth's family said in a heartfelt public statement:

"Those closest to Randy will remember his sense of humor and his love of storytelling. He had a remarkable ability to share a story and find humor in everyday moments. He especially loved celebrating Fiesta at his Santa Barbara home and gathering friends and family for backyard barbecues around the firepit, where stories, laughter, and memories were shared late into the evening."

Randolph Mantooth was more than an actor

Randolph Mantooth's career in the television industry began long before he landed his breakout role as paramedic 'Johnny Gage' on NBC’s Emergency!, a show that's often credited for popularizing the profession of paramedics in America. The show aired from 1972 to 1979 and made Mantooth a beloved figure on television.

Before finding this iconic role, Mantooth played minor roles in several television series, including Adam-12 (1968), Marcus Welby, M.D. (1969), McCloud (1970), and Alias Smith and Jones (1971). Reflecting on the impact of Emergency! years later, Mantooth said he felt fortunate to be part of a show that "changed emergency medicine forever."

After his breakout success with the paramedic drama, Mantooth enjoyed a prolific television career spanning more than 50 years, appearing in popular series including ERL.A. LawChina BeachBaywatchCharlie's AngelsFantasy Island, and Sons of Anarchy. He also became a familiar face in daytime television, earning four Soap Opera Digest Award nominations for his work on LovingGeneral HospitalAs the World Turns and One Life to Live. In a statement shared with USA TODAY, Randolph's family said:

"Beyond acting, Randy’s bond with the emergency services community became one of the most meaningful parts of his life. He dedicated himself to honoring firefighters and paramedics, ensuring that their courage, sacrifice, and humanity were recognized."

For many fans, Mantooth's greatest legacy extends far beyond television. His portrayal of 'Johnny Gage' helped introduce millions of viewers to emergency medicine at a time when paramedics were still a relatively new profession in America.

The actor spent a significant part of his life advocating for first responders and firefighters, helping people acknowledge their courage and sacrifice for the sake of saving lives. His documentary, Into the Unknown, is reportedly in the process of being released, where he "sought to share the experiences of those on the front lines of emergency care."

Mantooth inspired millions to pursue careers in emergency medical services, but for his surviving family, he was the greatest son, partner, and brother that anyone could ask for.
