There were no official announcements about the same from both sides. Bollywood Hungama had quoted its source as saying, "They are all staying together at Aman Hotel in Ranthambore. At first, we all thought it's a vacation to bring in New Year, but with full attendance of RK and Alia's close pals, we are forced to think if they are getting engaged today. We heard from someone that a closed engagement ceremony might take place in hotel today." Now, Ranbir Kapoor's uncle, Randhir Kapoor has talked to the media about the same.
In a conversation with the Indian Express, Randhir Kapoor said Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are not getting engaged on Wednesday and are in Rajasthan with their families for a vacation. In his words, "It is not true. If Ranbir and Alia were to get engaged today, my family and I would have also been there with them. Ranbir, Alia and Neetu have gone there for holidays and to bring in the new year. The news of their engagement is incorrect."

Earlier, amid the reports of Ranbir and Alia's 2021 wedding, the latter had clarified in an interview with Pinkvilla, "When will I marry? Why is everyone asking me when I'm going to get married? You know I'm only 27 years old, and I think it's too soon to get married right now." Soon after which, her beau, Ranbir Kapoor, had confirmed that they would have sealed the deal this year if not for the pandemic. In an interview with Rajeev Masand, the Brahmastra star had retorted, "Well, I think it would have already been sealed if the pandemic had not hit our lives. I don't want to jinx it by saying anything. I want to tick mark that goal very soon in my life."
When asked if he had taken any classes during the lockdown, Ranbir Kapoor had praised his overachiever ladylove, Alia Bhatt and had said, "My girlfriend Alia is a bit of an overachiever, and she probably took every class there is -- from guitar to screenwriting. I always feel like an underachiever next to her. But no, I didn't take any classes. Initially we were dealing with the family crisis, and then I got into reading, spent time with my family, and I watch two-three films every day." Ranbir had also said that he is hopeful that 2021 will be an exciting year both personally and professionally for him.
