Priscilla Presley's personal life has always been a topic of discussion. The actress was married to rock and roll legend Elvis Presley.
The duo first met when she was 14, and after dating for 8 years, they got married. The couple was married from 1967 to 1973, and shared a daughter. As Priscilla Presley made a rare public appearance with a bold red head-to-toe look, her fans remained in awe. But did you know the reason behind her choosing various bold hair colors over the years?
Priscilla Presley dyed her jet-black hair in various shades of red after her split from Elvis Presley: Here's the reason
While it's definitely fashion, during the time she was married to Elvis, she would dye her hair jet-black. Following their split, she decided to let that raven-black hue go and opted for even bolder hair colors to experiment with. So, let's have a look at what the exact reason was.
In several of her interviews, Priscilla Presley shared that her ex-husband, Elvis, wanted her to dye her hair black. Priscilla's natural hair color was brown, and it was Elvis who wanted her hair color to be jet-black, something that would make them look alike. She also talked about the same in her memoir.

Priscilla, in her memoir, shared details about her marriage to Elvis and revealed how she felt that her relationship with him, in a way, was not 'healthy'. She added that Elvis would want her to dye her brunette hair a darker shade and wear heavier eyeliner so that her blue eyes would look even more defined. He was even very particular about what colors his wife should wear. Speaking about the same, Priscilla said:
"He liked me in red, blue, turquoise, emerald green, and black and white — the same colors he himself wore. I was Elvis's doll, his own living doll, to fashion as he pleased. The more we were together the more I came to resemble him in every way. His tastes, his insecurities, his hang-ups — all became mine."
In the same memoir, Priscilla also revealed that her ex-husband, Elvis even hated when she would middle-part her hair. However, it was after her split from Elvis that Priscilla started to experiment with her personal sense of style, which allowed her to try out hair colors, from brunette to blonde to strawberry. She said:
"The black eye makeup of the 1960s was replaced by the more natural look of the 1970s. I even lightened my eyebrows like the model Twiggy, whose blonde elfin looks and huge eyes had made her world famous. I experimented with hairstyles and hair colors, from brunette to blonde to strawberry. Now I could part my hair in the middle if I wanted to. Elvis had always hated hair parted in the middle, but now it was up to me."
Priscilla Presley's return to her signature style was not just fashion but showed her life journey
Priscilla's return to her signature hair colors and style arrived in the years after her split from Elvis Presley, and it coincided with her desire to leave her 'wife of Elvis' image behind and establish an independent identity. Over the years, Priscilla experimented with various shades of red hair from deep auburn to brighter red hues, and while she gave out bold style goals, according to Cliona Furey, the Head of the Hair Department for A24’s ‘Priscilla’, her hair actually showed 'the passage in time and Priscilla’s life journey'.
