However, that same joy was largely absent in her personal life. Her life was marked by heartbreaking losses from a young age, years-long financial hardships, chronic illnesses, and ultimately homelessness.
Shyamala, who died on July 28, 2026, at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest, endured a series of tragedies that stood in stark contrast to her successful career in Telugu cinema.
Tragedy followed Pavala Shyamala from a young age
Pavala Shyamala (Nethi Shyamala) was born in 1951 in Amaravathi, Andhra Pradesh. She lost her mother when she was very young, and her father, a businessman, was often away for work. Her childhood was largely unstable, and she had to take on responsibilities from an early age. Given her family's responsibilities, she was only able to study till the 10th standard.
Shyamala was married at just 13, and by 15 or 16, she had two children. After her husband died in an accident, she was still a teenager when she had to raise her children alone. To support her family, she started acting. What began as a way to survive turned into a career in over 250 Telugu films, making her one of the most recognised character actors in the industry.
Shyamala started her artistic career in theatre and radio before moving to films. She debuted in Babai Abbai (1985), but her role in Swarnakamalam (1988) brought her widespread fame and made her a well-known character actor in Telugu cinema. In the following decades, she acted in many popular films like Khadgam, Andhrawala, Varsham, Athadu, Golimaar, Bendu Apparao R.M.P., and Mathu Vadalara. She worked alongside major Telugu stars such as Chiranjeevi, Prabhas, Jr NTR, and Allu Arjun.
Even with her long film career, Shyamala faced financial problems in her later years. A fundraiser by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK shared that she had to sell her trophies, awards, and personal items just to pay for medicine and basic needs.
Pavala Shyamala was left homeless and prone to suicide in her final years
In the final years of her life, extreme poverty and health issues consumed both Shyamala and her daughter, Madhavi, which left them on the verge of ending their lives. Shyamala herself battled multiple chronic illnesses, including Parkinson's disease, hypertension, and serious heart-related complications, while simultaneously caring for Madhavi, who was reportedly bedridden and undergoing treatment for tuberculosis.
In December 2025, Shyamala and her daughter had to leave their home because they could not pay rent. With nowhere to go, the police stepped in out of concern for their safety. They were then moved to a charitable home, where they received temporary shelter and care.
A few months later, in May 2026, Shyamala went to a private hospital in Hyderabad for heart treatment but was reportedly turned away because she could not pay for it. Reports say she was sent away in a taxi and left at a roadside junction late at night. People passing by saw her on the footpath and called the police, who then took her to the RK Foundation.
When news of Shyamala's situation spread on social media, producer and Film Development Corporation chairman Dil Raju stepped in to arrange her medical treatment and cover her immediate expenses.
In 2021, filmmakers Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK (Raj & DK) started a crowdfunding campaign on Milaap after revealing that Shyamala had used up her savings and sold her awards to get by. The fundraiser also mentioned her daughter's long illness and the family's high medical costs. These efforts gave some temporary relief, but they could not undo the years of financial hardship Shyamala had faced.
On July 28, 2026, Pavala Shyamala took her last breath after suffering a massive cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment at Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad. While audiences will remember Shyamala for the countless characters she portrayed on screen, her life story has also become an equally powerful reminder of the hardships that many veteran performers unfortunately continue to face after decades of entertaining the masses.
