The 10 days of Durga Puja have already begun, and we know the pressure you must be going through right now to pick new outfits for each day of puja. Should I wear that traditional handloom saree? Will I look too old-fashioned? Should I try a floor-length anarkali or pick an asymmetrical kurti? Your mind must be brewing with a number of questions like these.
So, here we are with some outfit inspiration from our very own Bollywood divas for you to look chic and fabulous throughout the 10 days of Durga Puja.
A popular clothing item with the younger generation, palazzo suits in simple designs are perfect for the first five days of Durga Puja, as there is not much to do except offering your prayers and pushpanjali to the Goddess. Look for kurtis with long slits on the sides, asymmetrical hems or sheer fabrics to pair them up with matching palazzo pants. Go for minimal jewellery pieces and makeup, tie your hair up in a messy bun, and you are all set to pay your respects to Maa.
Another amazing option for the morning puja is an anarkali or saree in the combination of pristine white and gold. For a fresh and simple look, pick your saree in comfortable fabrics like cotton or silk. While for the anarkali, you can opt for georgette too. To add a perfect traditional touch to your look, adorn your bun with flowers and wear large kundan earrings or chand baalis with a few bangles. Keep your makeup light with just a bit of gloss and kohled eyes and walk off to the pandal in golden sandals or jootis.
This puja, take the fusion route on at least one of the days, if you are not much into the traditional wear. And believe us, everyone would be totally impressed with your choice. Pick dhoti pants, wide-legged palazzos, ethnic skirts to create your own fusion look. Finish off the look with chunky jewellery and ethnic jootis. Set out for the festivities with your family and friends with minimal makeup and smokey eyes.
Whether you are in Bengal or not, it does not matter. Just bring on the subtle grace for the morning pujas in Bengali cotton sarees. Drape yourself in any one of the comfortable cotton beauties like the Bangladeshi cotton, dhaniakhali weave, Bengal tangail, dhakai, taant, bengal silk, dhakai jamdani and hazarbuti saree. They are chic as well as traditional and perfect for the mornings. Style your hair in soft curls and leave it open or tie it in a loose bun with a few tendrils hanging loose. Simple earrings, red bindi, gold bangles, soft pink lips, sandals, and you are ready to stir the morning crowd in your beautiful avatar.
This puja, why not give yourself a new avatar in contemporary-styled sarees with dramatic drapes. Take your pick from these quirky and stylish saree drapes such as wavy drape, dhoti style drape, saree with a crop top, tulip drape, knot saree drape. Instead of a petticoat, wear leggings, elephant pants, flared pans or palazzo pants for a completely gorgeous Indo-western look.
To complete this look, all you need are some interesting accessories like wide belts, statement neckpieces, a couple of bangles, danglers and fashionable high heels. If you have to walk a lot, ditch the high heels for jootis. Go for smokey or heavily kohled eyes, nude or pink lips with a bit of blush, and a piled-up hairstyle to rock the festive night.
Want to stand out in the crowd of bling and embellishments? Try out the quirky printed sarees that are quite in trend these days. These sarees are not only modern, light and easy-to-wear, but also quite affordable. The combination of bold and vivid colours with quirky prints would truly stand out in the pandal. Opt for just one piece of statement jewellery, for example, a big ring, chunky necklace, thick bangles or large earrings, and keep your makeup minimal with kohled eyes.
Keeping a saree in place while you hop from pandal to pandal is an art that not all of us can excel in. So, why not try some all-time favourite anarkalis, which are equally feminine and stylish? Take your pick from the different styles of anarkalis available in the market, like the anarkali gowns, floor-length anarkali, or the asymmetrical anarkalis. Finish off your regal festival look with ethnic jewellery in polki/kundan and high heels. Try different hairstyles to suit your face and opt for dramatic eye makeup with a little blush on your cheeks.
Indulge yourself in designer sarees with all sorts of fascinating embellishments and embroideries on them for the ashtami evening outing. Choose from rich fabrics like crepe, tissue, georgette and brocade that are embellished with sequins, zari or motifs. Or, you can even try a plain saree in bright colours with a heavily embellished metallic blouse, which is very much in style these days. Glam up your look with dramatic makeup, hair accessories, potli bag, chunky earrings or a stack of bangles in one hand and pretty jhumkas.
Navami, the final day of the puja, is the perfect day to flaunt the black and gold lehenga, which is very much in vogue this year. You can either pick a plain black lehenga or skirt and pair it up with a heavily embellished golden choli, or dress the other way round as well. Wear a striking piece of statement jewellery like a matha patti or a nose ring, a couple of thin bangles and a chunky ring with a nice hair updo. Let natural and dewy makeup with soft pink lips do all the talking while you dance away to the tunes of dandiya music or dhaak.
Worn on the last day of the Durga Puja, i.e., Dashmi or Dussehra, the ethnic white saree with a red border is a must try. It might have been done to death, but wearing a traditional white saree with red border during the Durga Puja has its own charm. Drape the saree in the traditional Bengali style or wear it normally. Try on this look with elegant gold jewellery and a big red bindi on the tenth day of the puja while bidding adieu to the goddess. If you are newly-married then there is nothing better than the crimson line on your hair parting.
