Who is Jelena Djokovic?
Jelena Djokovic is the wife of Novak Djokovic. As beautifully described by Novak, she is the one who runs with the wolf (his nickname given by his fans). The statement literally means that Jelena was always on her toes as Novak conquers the world with a match at a time and continues to reign as the king of tennis.
Jelena Djokovic once dated Novak Djokovic's friend
Jelena and Novak have been friends since they were teenagers. They had a funny first meeting at a tennis club in Serbia in the early 2000s. Novak had big dreams to conquer tennis headlines one day, while Jelena was an excellent student and she was all set to study in Milan for higher education. They became friends through shared laughs, tennis and more.
Once, Novak revealed that he first met his now-wife, Jelena, in an awkward situation. It all happened when he first heard about Jelena from his friend, who was dating her and thought of announcing his love after their team won a match. Novak revealed that his friend wore a jersey, and underneath he had worn a white T-shirt with, 'Jelena, I love you. This is for you," written on it.
For Novak, it was lame, but then he wanted to know who Jelena was that his friend was dating. He said:
"It was funny because the first time I heard about her was when that friend, who was in the same tennis club as me, played a match for the regional tennis league and we won an important match, he took off his jersey, and underneath the jersey he had the white shirt written, 'Jelena, I love you. This is for you,' And we were like, 'Oh my God, this is so lame. Why would you do that?' And then who is this Jelena? And it was her."
Novak also asserted that he never stole Jelena from his friends. In fact, they started dating when Jelena had broken up with her ex-boyfriend. As per Novak, she was the only true love of his life.
There was a time when the couple couldn't even afford plane tickets
Novak Djokovic and Jelena had been in a long-distance relationship. And figuring out how to meet was a task as they would be on a tight budget. The couple started dating after five years of being friends. When they finally fell in love, life pulled them in different directions as Jelena was studying in Italy while Novak was chasing his tennis dream in Europe with no money in his wallet.
Jelena once talked about their 'figuring out ramen noodle years'. She stated that she was a student and he was a young tennis player with no money for expensive trips. Planes were out of reach for them. So, they would make plans on how to make the relationship work. She was quoted as saying:
"Us getting together was like science fiction almost. I was a student barely getting by, and he was a very young tennis player who also had no money to spare on expensive trips. Airplanes were, at the time, something utterly out of our reach. We contrived and devised these plans on how to meet, how to make our relationship work."
Jelena and Novak got married in July 2013, in a private ceremony just days after he won his second Wimbledon title. Jelena walked down the aisle while she was pregnant with her first child.
