Was Nolan Wells dating someone before his tragic death?
Nolan Wells played as a wide receiver for the football team at Southwest Mississippi Community College. Prior to that, he was a standout football player at Ocean Springs High School in Mississippi. As a budding talent in football, it would not have been surprising if the teenager had a girlfriend. However, there are no public records regarding the same. Amid the interest in Nolan's love life, his interaction with a young lady on the day of his death sparked buzz.
According to Incident Commander Josh Gill, Nolan's friends, with whom he went on his last trip, recalled seeing him talk to a young lady shortly before he became separated from his friends' group and his cell phone. It was the last time he was seen alive before he went missing on the Fourth of July. Notably, nothing about the lady except her name, Katie. Reports claim that the duo was "hanging out" before he went missing; however, it is not clear whether she was his lover or just an acquaintance.
Katie's mother, Gracie McCormack confirmed on social media that her daughter indeed spent time with Nolan on Horn Island. She noted that the two parted ways before he went missing and that Katie had no knowledge of what happened afterwards. As of July 6, 2026 (ET), she is the only woman linked to Nolan Wells since he disappeared and was found dead in Horn Island.

Nolan Wells was last seen alive near the northwest end of the island on July 4, 2026, at 3 p.m. ET. He was shirtless, wearing blue swim trunks and black sunglasses. He was seen speaking with a young lady for some time, and they allegedly parted ways. His boat trip friends also reportedly left. Everybody returned to their respective homes except Nolan, which worried his mom, Christine Wonsley. She waited for him until night and then called the police to file a missing-person report.
The next day, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department launched a massive search operation. They partnered with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, the US Coast Guard, the Gulf Islands National Seashore, and the volunteer organisation, United Cajun Navy. The varied teams took on varied roles, with some searching the land while others checked the surrounding waters using planes, boats, and foot patrols. On July 6, 2026, at 8:45 a.m. ET, a US Park Ranger reportedly discovered a body in the water at the northwestern tip of Horn Island.
After two hours, the officials met with the Nolan Wells family at the Lake Mars Boat Launch. They identified the body, and in the same evening, the footballer's mother confirmed his untimely passing. She shared an emotional statement on Facebook, mourning her son and requesting privacy in the tough time.
