Nirmal Purja's death left everyone shocked. The mountaineer was on an expedition to Broad Peak when an avalanche claimed the lives of the 10 group members, including Nims. While fans wait for the mortal remains of the climber to return to his hometown, his elder brother Jit Bahadur Purja Pun has reacted to his death.
An emotional Jit Bahadur Purja Pun spoke with NepalInLast24Hours and reflected on his brother's passing. For the unversed, Nirmal Purja's entire family is currently in Chitwan mourning the tragic loss of the mountaineer. However, there was something different about Nims' this expedition that now lies heavy on Jit's soul.
During the conversation, Jit Bahadur Purja Pun broke down as he recalled how his brother always asked him to light incense before he left for an expedition. However, this time he left for Pakistan without even saying goodbye to him. For the unversed, some reports have alleged that the Broad Peak expedition was a last-minute addition to Nirmal Purja's schedule.
Nirmal Purja had a record of zero fatalities on his 8000-meter climbs before Broad Peak
Nirmal Purja was a pro-mountaineer and held a 100 per cent safe return record before the incident on July 30, 2026. In an interview dated August 27, 2022, Nims reflected on his expedition record and said he had never failed any of his thirty-two 8,000-meter climbs. He shared that not only were his climbs a success, but they also held a major milestone for him because everyone returned safely.
"I have led 32 eight-thousand-meter peak expeditions, and I have never failed any of them. So, 32 out of 32 have been successful, not only in terms of reaching the summit but also bringing everyone home exactly the same way they left. So, that's my track record; I think no one has that."
However, unfortunately, the summit he failed to reach also ended up being his last expedition, marking not just the first fatality on his led climbs but also his own demise. For the unversed, it was previously reported that Nims Purja and nine other climbers went missing from Camp 2 of the Broad Peak. At 21,161 feet, the point is short of what is known as the 'death zone' in international mountaineering. However, that's where Nims and his expedition were headed.
The area is called a 'death zone' because at this altitude, cells begin dying faster than they can be replaced. According to reports, Nirmal Purja was leading the team before they went missing. The group included 5 Nepali climbers, 1 Pakistani, 1 American, 1 Omani, 1 Chinese, and 1 more foreign climber. Reports have alleged that the avalanche struck the group while they were en route between Camp 2 and Camp 3.
Reports had also estimated Nirmal Purja's last alleged location before he disappeared. According to reports, the climber's satellite tracking device placed him at 21,847 feet at 9:38 AM on Thursday, July 30, 2026, then saw a rapid fall of approximately 800 meters by 10:18 AM, before going completely blank. His body was found at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters (18,701 feet).
