When Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone started dating one another, their fans were over the moon. Whether it was Deepika’s RK tattoo or their chemistry, everything about the couple was perfect. Hailed as the ‘IT’ couple, every appearance of the duo sent ripples and awestruck everyone. However, destiny had other plans, and the once madly-in-love couple broke up.
When Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone broke up, people started speculating about the same and cited many possible reasons. There were also reports stating that the other ex of Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, was the reason behind his breakup with Deepika Padukone. It was said that his affair with Katrina had started during the production of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani in 2009.

Amid all the fiasco, Ranbir Kapoor’s mom, Neetu Kapoor, opened up about his breakup with Deepika Padukone. During ‘Meet the Parent’ section of Simi Garewal’s chat show, India’s Most Desirable, Neetu cited the reason behind Ranbir and Deepika’s breakup and said:
“I don’t think he’s had many girlfriends. He’s had just one girlfriend and that’s Deepika. I think maybe there was something missing in their relationship. There was something not there. Maybe he was not himself and he needed to break off. Everybody has relationships and they move on. If their relationship was perfect, they wouldn’t have broken up. Ranbir was probably not himself in the relationship.”
After Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone broke up, rumour mills had it that Neetu Kapoor was behind the split as she didn’t like Deepika. In 2013, Ranbir clarified all the rumours that accused his mother of being the reason for his breakup with his ex-girlfriend, Deepika Padukone. On Rajat Sharma’s television show, Aap Ki Adalat, Ranbir said:
"It's an issue between two individuals, but people work on several theories and then disturb things. My mother loves me a lot and wants me to live my own life. My mother is also very fond of Deepika. So, at least this was not the reason for the split. I want to clarify, my mother was not the reason for the break-up."

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone started dating after they worked together in the film, Bachna Ae Haseeno. But the couple had to call it quits due to Ranbir’s apparent cheating. In an interview with Verve magazine in 2010, Deepika revealed how Ranbir was an unfaithful partner and said:
“For me, sex is not just about physicality; there are emotions involved. I have never cheated or strayed when I’m in a relationship. If I’m going to be fooling around, why would I be in a relationship? It’s better to be single and have fun. But not everyone thinks like that. Maybe that’s why I’ve been hurt in the past. The first time he cheated on me, I thought there was something wrong with the relationship, or me. But when someone makes a habit of it, you know the problem lies with him.”
Ranbir Kapoor is happily married to actress, Alia Bhatt, while Deepika Padukone tied the knot with Ranveer Singh.
