Neena Gupta is one of the most phenomenal actresses in the Indian cinema. After carving a glorious career in the late 80s and early 90s, she is now impressing everyone with her performance in the second innings with films Badhaai Ho, Lust Stories 2, Uunchai, Sardar Ka Grandson and others. Known to be a fearless woman, Neena has never shied away from making her bold stances out loud. Be it raising her love-child, Masaba singlehandedly or opting to work in some path-breaking films, Neena is indeed an inspiration to many.

Neena Gupta talks about her mother’s reaction to her ambition for films

Neena Gupta, who has been redefining her masterclass performances every time, recently appeared on the panel at the Prithvi Film Festival. During the same, the actress recalled her initial days as a student at the National School Of Drama and revealed the reaction of her mother to her aspirations to make it big in the film industry. Sharing how her mother had severe inhibitions about the same, Neena expressed:

“My mother looked down upon Hindi films and preferred only English cinema. However, once I saw myself on the big screen in Aadharshila, I thought, mujhe yahi karna hai. Ussi samay main tabaah ho gayi.”

Neena reveals she was mostly cast in male roles during her theatre days

Being a proud alumnus of the National School Of Drama, Neena Gupta has paved her way through a strong foundational base. During the film festival, the actress also talked about her learning years and revealed how, in most college plays, she was offered to play only male roles and was never given the role of the protagonist or heroine. In her words:

“In college, I was mostly cast in male roles and as male house helps in plays because I was taller than than the other girls. I was too shy to ask the director for the main part. I would rehearse the lines of the heroine at home and felt that I performed better than the heroines. My first ever significant act in a play was Aadhe Adhoore.”

When Neena recalled about her upbringing under a strict mother

In an earlier interaction with The Indian Express, Neena Gupta recalled her childhood and opened up about being raised by her extremely strict mother. Neena recalled how the latter never informed her of  things like sex and periods and also mentioned how the latter even made her warn her about roaming with her female friends.

When Neena talked about tackling social stigma after having her daughter, Masaba out of wedlock

In her personal life, Neena Gupta had helmed headlines when she gave birth to her daughter, Masaba being unmarried and out of wedlock with cricketer, Vivian Richards. Recalling the severe stigma she faced because of her decision, Neena once mentioned:

“I am not a rebel. I am a chooha (mouse). I am not unconventional. I am the most conventional person right now. Just because I had a baby out of wedlock, which millions of women have in India and out… But the media made me into, ‘Ah brave’. After my death the headline will come, ‘Neena Gupta who lived life on her own terms passes away’. I did not.”
