The actress and singer began her career as a child star before her breakout role. She died in July 2020 at the age of 33 in an accidental drowning at Lake Piru, California, while boating with her son, Josey Hollis Dorsey.
As per a new update, Josey Hollis Dorsey has managed to get his first film role in The Burning Valley, a drama about deindustrialization, where he will appear alongside his father, Ryan Dorsey. Amid this, Naya and Ryan’s relationship has come into the limelight.
Naya Rivera and Ryan Dorsey were married for four years

Naya Rivera and Ryan Dorsey first crossed paths in 2010 while she was working on Glee. It was her co-star Heather Morris who played matchmaker during a night out, reportedly telling Dorsey that her friend thought he was attractive and urging him to go talk to her.
Dorsey later said in early 2025 that he was not the kind to approach women, so Rivera herself walked over, asked for his name, and started talking. They dated intermittently for years. Dorsey said he never fully got her out of his mind even during their time apart, because they were goofy together, understood each other, and he felt she was someone he could see himself marrying.
In April 2013, during one of their breaks, Rivera began dating rapper Big Sean, and they were engaged for six months. However, they separated in April 2014. Dorsey recalled that his then-girlfriend, who followed tabloid news, asked him if he had seen the headlines about his ex. He said he sent Rivera an email to check on her, she asked where he was, they met for dinner, and that meal brought them back together.
The pair exchanged vows on July 19, 2014, in a small ceremony in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, wearing Monique Lhuillier and Dolce & Gabbana and exchanging Neil Lane rings. At the time, they expressed to PEOPLE that they felt fortunate and that the day felt destined.
Naya Rivera later revealed in 2016 that she had become pregnant with Ryan Dorsey's child during an earlier split and had an abortion alone without informing him. She said that telling him later and receiving his compassionate response deepened her feelings.
Their son Josey Hollis Dorsey was born on September 17, 2015. They went through a difficult period, filing and then dismissing a divorce, before an arrest in West Virginia in November 2017 after Dorsey was reportedly hit during a walk with their son. The charge was dropped two months later after he chose not to pursue it. She filed again in December 2017, and the divorce was finalized in June 2018, with Dorsey saying that they remained focused on putting Josey first.
Naya Rivera’s son has been cast in a film

Naya Rivera and Ryan Dorsey's son, Josey Hollis Dorsey, has landed his first screen role, according to an IMDb listing for the 10-year-old. He is reportedly cast in a new feature from writer-director Evan Coury titled The Burning Valley.
Josey will portray a character called 'Son,' while his father Ryan is set to play a role named 'Father.' An official synopsis has not yet been posted online, but Coury described the project in an interview with Pennsylvania-based newspaper The Tribune-Review, where the film started shooting earlier in August 2026.
Coury said the story centers on a steelworker who loses his job after the local mill announces it is shutting down, and follows his journey as he moves through his Rust Belt hometown. Prior to securing his first film role, Josey made his acting debut at age 8 in a stage production of Seussical Jr. in West Virginia, his father's home state, in 2024.
The latest update arrives a few years after Naya Rivera’s sudden demise. Back in July 2020, Rivera and Josey went boating at Lake Piru, California. When the pontoon drifted, Naya reportedly helped her son back onto the boat. Investigators concluded she exhausted herself saving him and drowned. Josey later recalled trying to help with a rope but being frightened by a spider on it.
Dorsey has raised Josey alone since, moving to West Virginia in 2023 to work remotely as the sole provider. He has said he does not believe everything happens for a reason, but tries to parent the way Rivera would have, including throwing Josey a large 10th birthday party in 2025 that he believed she would have loved.
