The search for Nancy Guthrie has taken a dramatic turn, as TMZ receives a new ransom note with much more sophisticated and "graphic" details about the 84-year-old. While the law enforcement officials are yet to find a possible suspect in Nancy's mysterious disappearance, the new note has cited what's being described as "biological evidence" and proof of life.
Nancy, the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since February 1, 2026, after she was allegedly abducted from her Tucson home. Now, nearly three weeks later, fresh claims are raising new questions about her fate. According to TMZ founder Harvey Levin, the outlet received yet another ransom message on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, and he is describing it as more chilling than previous communications.

Speaking about the new ransom note, Levin says the sender has provided much more detailed and specific demands than the previous ones, including a USD 6 million amount in Bitcoin that will automatically go into the sender's account. If not paid, however, the consequences may be severe, given the graphic description. In an appearance on Erin Burnett OutFront, Levin said:
“The amount they’re asking for in this different type of currency is roughly the same as the amount in the first ransom note, the equivalent of USD 6 million. They graphically describe the consequences if they’re not paid.”

The biggest question that the country is asking right now is whether Nancy Guthrie is still alive. It turns out, the new ransom note appears to have given sufficient hints that Nancy is alive. When asked about the proof of life, Levin gave a positive response. He cited references to consequences that suggest ongoing control over her condition. He also previously mentioned that Nancy is aware of the ransom demand made in her name.

Speaking about the previous message that TMZ received, Levin says it claimed that Nancy was “OK, but scared” and fully aware of the demands outlined in the letter. Reflecting on its tone, Harvey Levin said it came across as serious and highly specific. Regarding the proof of life in the new note, Levin hinted at an "insider knowledge" and stated:

“By inference, they do. They don’t say it directly, but by inference, they do, in terms of consequences."
According to recent updates from TMZ, which cited law enforcement sources, the FBI has formally contacted Mexican federal authorities as part of the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie. While no concrete leads have emerged, agencies on both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border, including local police departments, are now coordinating efforts. Although the possibility was initially downplayed, investigators reportedly believe Nancy may have been taken into Mexico at some point after her abduction, even if not immediately.
Border Patrol cameras and electronic monitoring systems were checked early on in the investigations. According to officials, there was no immediate evidence that Nancy was taken into Mexico right after her abduction from her Catalina Foothills home. However, investigators now believe she could have been moved later, acknowledging that there are indeed some ways to cross the border without triggering alarms.
The officials' decision to go international reportedly comes after the new ransom email to TMZ that allegedly includes graphic threats, hints of a cross-border kidnapping, and a new crypto account number. While the authenticity of the claim hasn't been verified, it's largely believed that Mexican cartels generally prefer transactions via cryptocurrency.

Investigators recently revealed they are analysing newly discovered “biological evidence” recovered during an additional search of Nancy’s home. The Pima County Sheriff's Department confirmed that forensic testing is underway, though officials have not disclosed the nature of the evidence. Previously, DNA recovered from a glove found miles from Nancy’s home did not immediately match any profiles in CODIS. The officials are now planning to perform an investigative genetic genealogy to track down the suspect.
