The search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has taken a dramatic turn after newly recovered doorbell camera footage revealed a masked, armed individual outside her Tucson home the night she disappeared, allegedly abducted. Ten days into the investigation into the vulnerable adult's alleged abduction, officials have finally recovered data from Nancy's Nest doorbell software, which revealed a chilling 44-second video of an unidentified man carrying a backpack. Amid the surge of tips from the public, a former top federal official says the images could just be the key to cracking the case.
What was captured in the doorbell camera footage?
On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the FBI released newly recovered images and a 44-second doorbell camera video showing a potential suspect outside Nancy Guthrie’s Catalina Foothills home in Tucson, Arizona. The footage captures a masked individual wearing gloves and a ski mask, at one point holding a flashlight in his mouth while appearing to tamper with the camera. He is also seen covering the lens with weeds pulled from the porch. Nancy’s daughter, Savannah Guthrie, shared the images on social media, urging the public to help identify the man and insisting she believes her mother is still alive.

Retired FBI official points out remarkable details that can help in identifying the suspect
Amid the manhunt for Nancy Guthrie, retired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe described the stills as a “remarkable series of images” that can help identify the alleged suspect. Speaking to CNN, McCabe said the stills captured from the footage could be enough to piece together the person's identity if close attention is paid. He told the outlet:
"The still images are much better than I expected. A lot of detail in the images of the clothing and the glove, and all that stuff, which by themselves would not mean that much, but when you put them together might very well inspire someone who actually knows this person say 'hey, I know who that is.'”

McCabe especially pointed out that the alleged suspect was a rookie, someone with no prior training in carrying a firearm, judging by the way he carried the gun in a holster. By analysing the footage, the former FBI official pointed out how the person seemed not to be in a rush, or even "moving with a purpose". McCabe highlighted how unusual the lack of urgency looked, considering that the person was trying to abduct someone from a private property. He remarked:
“No person with law enforcement or military training would ever carry a firearm in a holster like that, right where it's at the center of his body... [the person is] not particularly furtive or concerned, and doesn’t seem to be in a rush... It’s kind of not what you think about when you think about an executed kidnapping."
Why do the images matter? Ex-FBI officials weigh in
The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff's Department released the surveillance photos as the investigation into the 84-year-old’s disappearance enters its second week. Nancy was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home on January 31, 2026. Since then, alleged ransom notes and growing public concern have intensified scrutiny of the case. And now, ex-officials are pointing out how the clothing details of the intruder, including the gloves, the jacket, the shoes, and the backpack, could collectively play a huge role in piecing things together.
Another former FBI official noted that the suspect appeared surprised upon noticing the doorbell camera, and their futile attempt to cover it with foliage was a rookie mistake that might help investigators identify the suspect. In an interview with CBS News, retired FBI agent Jason Pack noted:
"Take a look at each piece of clothing. Each article that he has. The weapon. The backpack. Look at his eyebrows. The ski mask. Look at those things individually. And then, collectively, watch how he walks. Look at his gait. Look at the person's demeanour. Does somebody recognise how somebody walks like that? Somebody's gonna know that if this is a relative of theirs or a friend or a co-worker, somebody will know them."

Law enforcement officials are now working with "persons of interest" in Nancy Guthrie's kidnapping case
Law enforcement sources say authorities have detained the first individual in connection with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. Multiple outlets report that the person was located south of Tucson, near Rio Rico, Arizona, about an hour from Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills, where she was allegedly abducted. Officials say the detention stems from investigative leads developed in recent days as the case entered its second week.
So far, no identity or specific details about the individual have been released. The FBI has directed all inquiries to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, which has declined to provide further comment. Authorities have emphasised that the person is being questioned only and has not been formally identified as a suspect. Investigators are now working to determine the individual’s residence and whether any vehicles, storage units, or additional properties may require search warrants.

Amid the surge of new information from the public, FBI director Kash Patel has confirmed that the investigators are working with multiple "persons of interest". This development marks a substantial shift from prior statements that no suspects had been identified. As of February 11, 2026, Nancy Guthrie has been missing for 11 days, and more than 100 law enforcement officials, including the Pima County Sheriff's Department and the FBI, are actively conducting a manhunt for the potential abductor. Meanwhile, there has been no proof of life yet, and the previous ransom demands made to the Guthrie family have also expired their deadlines.

As the public suspiscion looms over Nancy Guthrie's son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, his ex-bandmate, Dominic, and Savannah Guthrie's first husband, Mark Orchard, the authorities have not filed any formal charges yet, nor has anyone been labelled an official suspect in the case.
