Nancy Guthrie's kidnapping has left Pima County shaken. It has been over a month since the 84-year-old went missing. However, there hasn't been any confirmation about her whereabouts. After weeks of searching, despite evidence, law enforcement is still not certain how much longer it will take to find Today show host, Savannah Guthrie's mother. Amid that, there have been questions about the work history of Pima County Sheriff's Department's Chris Nanos.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department is addressing questions about Sheriff, Chris Nanos’ work history amid the search for Savannah Guthrie's missing mother, Nancy Guthrie. The department issued a statement to US Weekly on March 10, 2026 (ET), addressing discrepancies in the Sheriff's resume. They stated:

"The Pima County Sheriff’s Department recently identified two clerical errors in Sheriff Chris Nanos’ publicly posted resume. Both date discrepancies were administrative in nature and were not intended to mislead or misrepresent Sheriff Nanos’ work history."

The Pima County Sheriff's Department clarified on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 (ET), that Nanos had served with the El Paso Police Department from 1976 to 1982, rather than the earlier-mentioned dates, which indicated he worked in the department until 1984. They clarified that he was promoted to the rank of captain in 2007, and that the dates were merely administrative errors and not meant to mislead anyone. The statement read:

"Chris served with the El Paso Police Department from 1976 to 1982. His service with the El Paso PD concluded in 1982, not 1984 as previously stated. Additionally, Sheriff Nanos was promoted to captain in 2007, not 2009. These administrative errors have been corrected."

Pima County Sheriff's Department shared a link to Chris Nanos' updated resume and concluded that he has more than four decades of experience in law enforcement. The statement asserted that Chris has always been committed to his job and to serving the people of his community. The statement could be read as:

"Sheriff Nanos has dedicated more than four decades to law enforcement and public service. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to professionalism, accountability and the safety of the communities he serves. As Sheriff of Pima County, he continues to lead the department with experience, integrity and a clear focus on protecting the residents of Pima County."

Why are people questioning Chris Nanos' resume?

The statement comes a day after the newspaper, The Arizona Republic, reported that Chris Nanos resigned in lieu of termination from the El Paso Police Department in 1982, two years earlier than the date listed on his resume, which was posted on the agency’s website. According to records cited by the outlet, Chris resigned from the Texas police department after six years. However, it was to avoid termination after a series of disciplinary issues. As per reports, this included insubordination, excessive force, off-duty gambling and tardiness.

Chris Nanos has been at the forefront of the Nancy Guthrie case since the 84-year-old was reported missing on February 1, 2026 (ET). The latter was last seen by her family on the evening of January 31, 2026 (ET) and is believed to have been abducted from her home in Tuscon, Arizona, in the middle of the night. There has been DNA evidence and video surveillance footage recovered from Nancy's home in the search, but she remains missing after more than five weeks. The family has been actively looking for clues about Nancy, and her kids, Savannah, Annie, and Camron Guthrie, have even increased the reward for her return to USD 1 million, while the FBI has offered USD 100,000 for credible information that might help find Nancy.
