A new online theory has emerged in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of TODAY co- host Savannah Guthrie. YouTuber Richard Alvey claims Guthrie is buried on a Nipomo, California, property linked to Frederick Woods, a claim amplified by investigator Jonathan Lee Riches.

Guthrie was reported missing from her Tucson, Arizona home on Feb 1, 2026, and authorities still treat it as a kidnapping. Nancy Guthrie’s case remains an active kidnapping investigation, with no public confirmation of her death and no suspects named.

Richard Alvey reveals the address where Nancy Guthrie is reportedly buried

A new theory about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance surfaced online, pushed by YouTuber Richard Alvey and amplified by self-described investigator Jonathan Lee Riches, known as JLR. On X (formerly Twitter), JLR posted that Alvey “claims he knows where Nancy Guthrie is buried” and alleged the location is on land tied to Frederick Woods in Nipomo, California.

In a video posted on July 18, 2026, Alvey said he knew the burial site. He described it as a grass lawn and shared a specific address, which was 1675 Scenic View Way, Nipomo. That’s more than 700 miles from Guthrie’s Catalina Foothills home in Tucson, where she was last seen. Alvey stated:

“You can’t just walk up to her grave. The gated compound is surrounded by a recently installed barbed wire fence. This property is a green oasis on a hill in the middle of a barren desert. Nancy is truly buried in nature.”

Alvey also named the property’s owner as Fred Woods, adding that the person had recently been granted parole after he allegedly kidnapped multiple children and buried them alive. He alleged that Woods lived near where Guthrie went missing. Alvey himself later commented that this was only a “theory.” He said that when he tried calling the FBI a few times, they ended the calls once they realized that the tip was not confirmed.

Public records show Woods does have a property in Nipomo. However, there’s no evidence placing him in the same area as Guthrie, and authorities have not named him as a person of interest. Alvey appears to be drawing from language in one of the ransom notes that referenced Guthrie being “buried in nature.” The FBI has already determined that note, along with two others sent at the same time, was not credible. Alvey has posted similar videos before trying to link Woods to the case.

To date, investigators have not connected Woods to Guthrie’s disappearance in any way. So, both the assertion that Guthrie is deceased and buried in California and the claim linking Woods to the kidnapping remain unsupported.

Savannah Guthrie steps away from TODAY to film another game show

Savannah Guthrie

Savannah Guthrie, a co-anchor on TODAY, announced on July 16, 2026, that she will be taking time away from the morning show to film NBC’s upcoming television version of the popular five-letter word game, Wordle. The new game show is set to arrive in 2027. Guthrie told viewers the production team will shoot the entire season over the next few weeks, saying that the entire season will be filmed. This has not happened for the first time.

At the beginning of 2026, Savannah stepped away from TODAY following the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie. The kidnapping case remains open and under FBI investigation. Guthrie revealed in May 2026 that NBC, Universal Television, The New York Times, and executive producer Jimmy Fallon had delayed production of Wordle to support her during that time. She said at that time:

“When everything happened with me and my family, they just stopped everything and said, ‘We’ll wait for you.’ And Hollywood is like a really tough business, and I didn’t expect that. And I just want to say thank you, it means so much to me.”

She acknowledged that returning to live TV amid the uncertainty has been difficult, considering the situation that she is going through.
