It's been over three months since Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today Show host, Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona home under mysterious circumstances. Nancy was last seen at night on January 31, 2026 (ET) by her daughter, Annie Guthrie's husband, Tommaso Cioni. Ever since the FBI released glimpses of a masked person of interest in Nancy's case, the internet has been buzzing with theories regarding who the kidnapper(s) might be. As the Nancy Guthrie case deepens by the day, details of her whereabouts a day before her abduction have surfaced.

Where was Nancy Guthrie hours before her kidnapping?

Nancy Guthrie was kidnapped around midnight on January 31, 2026, or the early morning of February 1, 2026, after her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, took her home from his and Annie Guthrie's place, which is just a few miles away from Nancy's. However, where was she a day before that? The New York Times reported that on January 30, 2026, Savannah's mom was at her friend's house with a group of acquaintances, having fun playing mahjong.

Before bidding each other goodbye in the afternoon, Nancy reportedly even checked with one of her friends, Anne Burnson, to make sure she would attend church at a friend's house the next day. Regarding the context, the women had a weekly ritual of gathering at a friend's house to watch a recording of the Manhattan service that Nancy's renowned daughter, NBC host Savannah Guthrie, had attended earlier that morning. According to the women, Nancy was always punctual for the meetings, and when she didn't arrive by 11 a.m., they grew worried, and that's when the search for Nancy began.

Nancy Guthrie's resurfaced picture of playing mahjong

Recently, independent journalist, Jonathan Lee Riches (popularly known as JLR) shared a picture of the 84-year-old, Nancy Guthrie playing mahjong with her friends. The photo included a mark on her wrist, which raised eyebrows among the public. One of the online users got worried about the mark and stated, "Oh my. Nancy's right arm has a big bruise. Blood thinners do that. Slight bump, and that happens. Ik from experience. Poor Nancy." Another commented, "That's something that's been concerning from the start to me, along with the proof APS was literally there. I keep feeling in my gut she was being abused."

Notably, the picture was taken a few months before Nancy's disappearance, as per an X user. JLR shared the pic to put faces to the fact that he was sharing, i.e., Nancy's mahjong game a day ahead of her abduction. But many misunderstood it as Nancy Guthrie's last picture before her disappearance. Additionally, the blood thinner and abuse theories are entirely speculative, and BollywoodShaadis cannot independently verify those claims.

How hopeful does the Nancy Guthrie case seem now?

Recent information received regarding Nancy Guthrie's case suggested that she may no longer be alive. A series of notes sent to TMZ in April 2026, from an anonymous individual claimed that Nancy Guthrie is "dead" and was ready to reveal everything they knew about the case, including where the elderly woman's body was. The individual simultaneously demanded one Bitcoin to deliver information about the abductors of Savannah Guthrie's mother "on a silver platter." Notably, the notes arrived on the same day Savannah returned to host the Today Show. The public is curious about whether the two events were linked.

According to The New York Post, the latest ransom note was sent by the same mystery person who had demanded one bitcoin in exchange for information on Nancy Guthrie's disappearance nearly two months ago. The anonymous source also expressed frustration, stating that they have been reaching out to the media outlet since February 11, 2026, but the notes have been "disregarded as a scam." They expressed disbelief that millions have already been spent on the search for Nancy; however, they were unwilling to spend one bitcoin on the source, who repeatedly offered to help themself.
