Nana Patekar Had Prepared For His Funeral, Kept Aside Wood For Cremation, 'Geeli Lakdi Mat Lagana..'

The news of his death left the entire nation in shock, but it seems like the veteran actor was 'always ready' to say goodbye to the world. A few years before his death, Nana Patekar talked about preparing for his own funeral and how he had set aside wood for his cremation.
Nana Patekar had prepared for his own funeral
In a September 2023 interview, Nana Patekar shared his thoughts on life and death. He then revealed that he had set aside the wood required for his own cremation. He was promoting his film, The Vaccine War, and spoke about his thoughts on death as the ultimate truth and an inevitability.

He shared that a person ultimately has to leave everything behind. But he never viewed death with fear, but as a natural part of life. Nana Patekar made a startling revelation that he had already kept aside 12 maunds of wood for his own cremation, and it is his final property that will be with him when he goes away. He said:
"Humko maloom hai hume 12 mann lakdi lagne wali hai. Yahi meri final property hai. Iske saath main chala chaunga."
Nana Patekar, known for living life on his own terms and not mincing words, shared his thoughts on death in the simplest way. For him, the wood is his final property which he would ultimately take with him. Nana Patekar also revealed the kind of wood he wants for his final rites and asked them not to use wet wood. He said:
"Maine apni 12 mann lakdiyan rakhi hui hain. Vo sukhi hain. Usi mein mujhe jalana. Gili lakdi mat istemaal karna."
Nana Patekar asked people not to use wet wood because the smoke would make mourners tear up, and he would think they were crying for him. He said:
"Phir aankh se paani ayega... aise mein marte waqt galatfehmi hogi ki mere liye ro rahe hain. Kam se kam marte waqt galatfehmi nahi honi chahiye."
Nana Patekar's son broke down at the hospital
For the unversed, Nana Patekar passed away at his Goa residence on October 8, 2026, at the age of 75. As per reports, he was feeling unwell and had pain on the left side of his chest at around 2:30 a.m. He was rushed to Manipal Hospital at around 4:20 a.m., where doctors tried to save him, but he was declared dead at approximately 5:20 a.m.
According to Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Nana messaged his friend around 2:30 a.m. that he was feeling unwell. However, the friend saw the message later and reached Nana Patekar's home at around 4 a.m., where he found Nana sweating and gasping for breath. He was then taken to the hospital, and despite CPR attempts, doctors were unable to save him.
Nana Patekar's son, Malhar Patekar, arrived at the hospital, and he was seen breaking down. The heartbreaking visual surfaced on the internet, as Malhar met doctors and family members at the hospital to complete formalities related to Nana's death. After the paperwork, Nana's mortal remains were handed over to the family.

Nana Patekar's mortal remains will be brought to Pune for his final rites. His funeral would take place at around 4 p.m. at his Pune farmhouse. He will be cremated with full state honors for his extraordinary work in Indian cinema.
