Ali Khamenei's death left Iran leaderless in a difficult time when it is fighting against the U.S. and Israel. But it seems the country has entered a new political chapter after his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was selected to succeed him, nearly a week after his death. He was chosen after a careful discussion by the powerful clerical body, better known as the Assembly of Experts in Iran. Notably, it is a rare generational leadership change in the country's highest leadership role. While everyone is now eyeing the new leader, public interest has shifted to the late wife.
Mojtaba Khamenei's wife, Zahra Khamenei, was the daughter of a renowned Iranian conservative politician, Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel. Her father played a significant role in Iranian politics and was a former Speaker of the Iranian Parliament. Subsequently, their union was considered as a way to improve ties between two powerful conservative families in Iran. She married Mojtaba in 1999, mainly to secure a strategic alliance between the office of Iran's supreme leader and a major political group under her father.

Despite her strong political background, Zahra led a private life away from politics and the media spotlight. There is little to no information available about her personal activities. But the lack of details about her is not uncommon, given the guarded nature of Iran's ruling family, especially for women. However, some reports by International outlets such as France 24 suggest that Zahra Haddad-Adel was killed in the same joint U.S.–Israel airstrikes that reportedly killed her father-in-law, Ali Khamenei, the former supreme leader of Iran. But there is no confirmation.

The strikes occurred during a tense period of conflict in the country, which shifted political power and led to an immediate transition. Meanwhile, Zahra and Mojtaba had three children together. Nonetheless, their identities have been kept largely private. It is due to the secrecy surrounding Iran's political elite. For those unaware, the elite families of Iranian politicians rarely share details about their personal lives. Despite the lack of public attention, Zahra was an important person in the country's political circles.

After the death of Iran's former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, the country was briefly functioning under an interim leadership arrangement. Meanwhile, the authorities analysed and picked a successor for Ali. The Assembly of Experts in Iran consists of 88 clerical bodies that select a supreme leader, and they eventually decide that Mojtaba Khamenei should take over the position. The news was confirmed that Mojtaba will be the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Sharing their dedication to the new leader, the IRGC said:

"The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps... is ready for complete obedience and self-sacrifice in carrying out the divine commands of the Guardian Jurist of the time, His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei."
According to statements released by Iranian state media, the Assembly of Experts made a quick decision to choose the new leader due to the intense "external aggression" against their country. Some experts suggest that Ali Khamenei's son, Mojtaba, was long considered one of the most influential persons in the country's political circles, unlike his siblings. He had reportedly maintained strong connections with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other powerful institutions within the state.

Mojtaba Khamenei was born in 1969 to Ali Khamenei and his wife, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh. He spent much of his early life studying religion and politics. Despite never holding a key government position before his appointment, he was widely considered a powerful figure in Iranian politics. In fact, he had significant influence in his father's office and was called a "gatekeeper" with strong links to Iran's clerical and military leadership.
What do you think about Mojtaba Khamenei's selection as Iran's new supreme leader?
