'Modha Rathiri' Ending Explained, Did Marudhu And Muthuselvi Finally Give Their Marriage A Chance?

Modha Rathiri follows the story of 'Marudhu' and 'Muthuselvi' and their chaotic rural wedding. After entertaining audiences in theatres, the film finally made its way to the OTT platform Netflix on September 18, 2026. The film's release comes right ahead of the weekend, so if you plan to add it to your watchlist, here's what you need to know. 

What begins as a chaotic rural wedding comedy becomes a surprisingly emotional story about love and responsibility. And at the centre of the film are our leads, 'Marudhu' and 'Muthuselvi'. Both are strongly against the arranged marriage, while 'Muthuselvi' is already in love with someone else; 'Marudhu' is still not over an incident from his past. However, when reality hits the couple, will they find their way into each other's lives?

What is Modha Rathiri about?

'Maruthanayagam' has been working in Dubai for around five years and has no interest in getting married. And his family knows this, so they trick him into coming back for a child's ear-piercing ceremony. However, once he comes home, he realises what is happening and is livid. Nonetheless, his family emotionally persuades him to meet the bride, which he reluctantly agrees to. 

However, what he does not know is that the bride has an even bigger secret. Our bride, 'Muthuselvi', has no interest in 'Marudhu' and has planned to run away with her boyfriend, who is apparently completely unprepared. He oversleeps (Yeah! I know), leaving 'Muthuselvi' trapped among her relatives. With no way to escape, she walks onto the stage and before she can gather enough courage, 'Marudhu' ties the thaali around her neck. 

Even though they are now married, nothing really changes for 'Muthuselvi'. On their first night, 'Marudhu' is clearly nervous because he doesn't feel any emotional connection with his wife. Whereas 'Muthuselvi' gives running away another chance, but only to be caught by her husband. This leads to the first honest conversation between the couple, and 'Marudhu' decides that he will help his wife escape with her lover.

Instead of feeling betrayed, 'Marudhu' decides to help 'Muthuselvi' and even accompanies her after everyone is asleep. This action separates him from everyone around him; even though his wife is leaving him for another man, he is not angry. He only wants to make sure that she gets to her lover safely. While 'Muthuselvi' is over the moon, looking forward to starting a new life with her lover, she soon finds out just how wrong she is.

'Nithish' is not prepared to take care of himself, let alone another woman. He doesn't have a stable job or money, and his friend asks how he expects to support 'Muthuselvi'. Hearing his friend question him, he realises that while loving someone was easy, he wasn't capable of building a life with her. When he finally reaches 'Muthuselvi', she begins talking about their future, but even the ordinary responsibilities terrify 'Nithish', and he asks his girlfriend to return to her husband.

'Marudhu' even offers to help them financially, but 'Nithish' refuses, proving he was not ready to take on that responsibility. Betrayed, 'Muthuselvi' slaps her lover, but even she knows that he is not capable of taking care of her. 'Nithish's' exit brings Modha Rathiri to its second big revelation; 'Marudhu' opens up about his first love, 'Nirmala', and how caste became the enemy in their love story. He shared how she committed suicide, leaving him heartbroken. 

However, he also admitted he often found himself hoping for a normal life, including marriage and children. Slowly but steadily, 'Muthuselvi' and 'Marudhu' build some sort of a bond, but things get heated when their families find out the truth. Soon, another ironic revelation is made. Apparently, 'Nithish' was another potential groom 'Muthuselvi's' family had picked for her, but their need for control kept them from talking to her, which means they never knew he was the man she wanted to initially marry.

'Marudhu' brings 'Muthuselvi' back home and assures her that whatever she decides will be acceptable to him. He asks her to sleep on it and deal with the rest in the morning, offering her a choice that was never given to her. However, when 'Muthuselvi's' mother finds out the truth, she slaps her, leading 'Muthuselvi' to have a breakthrough moment, and she walks out on everyone. Instead of letting her go, 'Marudhu' follows her, reminding his family that they forced him into this marriage and now he will stand by his wife.

Modha Rathiri ending explained

In the final sequence of Modha Rathiri, 'Muthuselvi' is seen crying her eyes out near the temple; 'Marudhu' joins her, but instead of telling her how to feel or offering her advice, he lets her cry. 'Muthuselvi' opens up about her childhood, her mother's control, and being abandoned by someone she loved. During this heart-to-heart, the film delivers its longest-running comedy.

The men transporting the specially ordered first-night bed, who have spent almost the entire film trying to find the groom's house, arrive and unknowingly ask 'Marudhu' himself for directions. After everything the newlyweds have experienced, the absurdity of the situation makes the couple laugh. While the men leave, they sit together, laughing and talking.

While the film leaves the future of 'Muthuselvi' and 'Marudhu' to the audience's imagination, they strongly suggest they are willing to give their marriage a chance. However, the important point is that 'Muthuselvi' does not suddenly fall madly in love with 'Marudhu'. But their connection is built over time, as 'Marudhu' respects her choices, protects her when she is vulnerable, refuses to exploit their marriage and stays beside her even when he gains nothing from doing so.

Modha Rathiri's ending is less about 'Muthuselvi' choosing one man over another and more about her understanding of what she actually needs from a partner. While her boyfriend offers romantic promises, he cannot handle reality. Whereas 'Marudhu' begins as a stranger but proves through his actions that he can offer patience, respect and emotional security. That is why the final scene does not need a dramatic declaration of love. The film's ending is not about love but the right to decide and choose, which somehow makes it even more beautiful.
