The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, was a legend who ruled the industry for many decades. He was one of the most culturally significant figures of the 20th and 21st centuries. He not just broke records with his music, but Michael was also known to have broken American racial barriers in his four-decade-long career. With his moonwalk, robot and anti-gravity lean, he popularised street dance.
The eighth child of the Jackson family, Michael, made his debut as a singer at age six with The Jackson 5. It was in 1979 that Michael rose to stardom with the album Off the Wall. But his 1982 album, Thriller, made him a global sensation. Since then, there was no looking back for him. Apart from music, Michael was known for his fashion choices, but the pop sensation also drew public scrutiny for his changing appearance over the years. He underwent several cosmetic procedures throughout his lifetime.

Michael Jackson was born with a broad flat nose, wide nostrils, and a full nasal tip. His tryst with cosmetic surgery began in 1979 when he broke his nose during a dance rehearsal. While trying to master the “anti-gravity lean”, Jackson fell down and broke his nose. He required medical attention to repair the fracture and correct his breathing. But the corrective surgery paved the way for cosmetic alterations. But it didn’t turn out as he hoped. His nose looked wider and flatter than he wanted.

Some reports even stated that the first surgery did not heal perfectly, leading to further surgeries. So he went for another nose surgery because he wanted a perfect nose. But Michael didn’t stop here and had 3rd, 4th, and 5th rhinoplasties, each time with the goal of making the tip narrower and thinner. As per multiple reports, he had over 12 nose surgeries. His multiple nose surgeries left him with a dainty nasal tip that had been pulled upward, resulting in an upturned nose.

In 1984, the then 25-year-old Michael Jackson filmed a Pepsi commercial in Los Angeles. The shoot went fine until the sixth take. A pyrotechnic exploded behind Michael and the singer’s hair had caught fire. The back of his head was engulfed in flames. Soon, he was rushed to the nearby hospital and was treated for second- and third-degree burns.

He suffered severe hair loss as the burns nearly reached the skull. He underwent surgery to remove scar tissue from his scalp, and the painful surgery included inserting balloons under the skin to stretch the scalp. The surgery failed to fully restore the hair, after which he decided to wear hairpieces permanently.

Jackson's skin had been medium brown in his youth. But from the mid-1980s, his skin colour started getting pale. The change in his skin colour drew a lot of attention with many claiming that the pop star has been bleaching his skin. Some even stated that Jackson underwent colour correction. But in 1983, Jackson’s dermatologist stated that the pop star had vitiligo, as a result of which he developed patches of skin losing their pigmentation.
This led Jackson to use heavy makeup and other products to conceal the uneven, blotchy patches of skin. According to multiple reports, Jackson used Benoquin cream, an FDA-approved treatment that removes dark pigment in vitiligo. In his 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, he said:
“I have a skin disorder that destroys the pigmentation of the skin… It’s something that I cannot help.”

Not only nose and scalp, but Michael Jackson also had a number of surgeries in his life. You name it, and he has done it. Apart from his multiple nose jobs, Michael got cheek implants and had a cleft put in his chin. It was widely reported that the King of Pop had cheekbone augmentation, a cleft chin implant, eyelid surgery, eyebrow tattooing, and lip reshaping. He often wore surgical masks in various colours to hide fresh work on his face.

People often thought that Jackson’s nose was on the verge of falling, and he often sported a paper tape at the tip of his nose. The tape is used after the cosmetic procedure, and patients are required to wear it post-op for 1 week. Jackson wore the tape on his nose almost all the time, except when he is performing.
Dr Wallace Goodstein, who worked alongside Jackson during his surgeries, once revealed that the pop star was a regular patient. As per Goodstein, Jackson revealed that there was possibly no part of his face which didn’t undergo the knife. As per the doctor:
“He had multiple surgeries. He came in approximately every two months. It was about 10 to 12 surgeries in two years while I was there.”
