Why Did Lisa Marie Presley File Divorce From Michael Jackson? Truth About The High-Profile Marriage

The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, enjoyed immense fame in his life. Fans often went crazy and fainted during his live performances. Such was his aura that people only wished to have one glimpse of the iconic star. His life was always in the limelight, and so was his marriage to Elvis Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. Michael and Lisa’s romance was one of the most talked-about topics in the entertainment world.

Lisa Marie and Michael met for the first time in the 1970s when they were just kids. But they reconnected again in the early 90s while Lisa was married to Danny Keough. Her marriage to Danny was going through a rough phase. During one of the meetings, Michael confessed to being madly in love with Lisa while she was still married to Danny.

In her memoir From Here to the Great Unknown, Lisa Marie wrote about how Michael proposed to her while she was already married back then. Recalling MJ’s words, she wrote:

“Michael said, ‘I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m completely in love with you. I want us to get married and for you to have my children.’ I didn’t say anything immediately, but then I said, ‘I’m really flattered, I can’t even talk.’ By then, I felt I was in love with him too.”

Michael’s confession about his love prompted Lisa to call off her wedding to Danny. Her divorce was finalised in 1994, and within 20 days of her divorce, she secretly tied the knot with the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

What went wrong in Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley’s marriage?

Since both Michael and Lisa had popular backgrounds, fame was not new to them, but the constant media glare on their relationship began to strain their marriage. On top of everything, Michael’s erratic lifestyle added fuel to the fire. Not just this, Lisa already had kids with her ex-husband, Danny Keough, and she often connected with him for the sake of their children.

This left Michael unsettled, as he couldn’t bear the fact that she was still connected to her ex-husband. Michael would disappear for days and push her away when he felt vulnerable. But soon, Lisa realised that it was his coping mechanism.

Despite claims that things weren’t all well between Michael and Lisa, the couple tried their best to stand by their marriage in public. They tried to counter the gossip and speculation by making high-profile public appearances. It also included the infamous kiss at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards as he announced, “nobody thought this would last.” Lisa Marie was reportedly embarrassed by the stunt.

Why did Lisa Marie Presley file for divorce from Michael Jackson?

Jackson’s addiction struggles started to throw a wrench in their relationship. After months of rumours, Lisa and Michael went their separate ways in December 1995. Only 20 months into the marriage, Lisa Marie Presley filed for divorce from Michael Jackson in January 1996. Lisa later admitted that she was alarmed by Michael’s increasing dependence on prescription drugs. 

In August 1996, Michael and Lisa’s divorce was finalised, citing “irreconcilable differences”, and he went on to marry nurse Debbie Row and later welcomed their son, Prince. Michael died at the age of 50 in 2009 from a cardiac arrest because of an overdose of propofol. After Michael’s death, she wrote on her blog how she felt ‘gutted’ that she ‘failed to help’ him. Lisa Marie wrote:

"The person I failed to help is being transferred right now to the L.A. County Coroner's office for his autopsy. All my indifference and detachment that I worked so hard to achieve over the years has just gone into the bowels of hell, and right now, I am gutted."
