Rachel Burden and Luke Mendham's low-key love story

While her professional life is in the limelight, Rachel prefers to keep her personal life away from the spotlight. The couple got married in 2004. In September 2024, the pair completed 20 years of togetherness. To celebrate the day, Rachel penned a beautiful post for her husband, Luke. Sharing some adorable snaps, the BBC Breakfast star wrote:
"It was 20 years ago today. So I ‘made’ him put on that old suit, because I loved my wedding dress so much. And we celebrated with beautiful friends who married in the same church the day before us - although we only found out when we moved in opposite them 3 years later (and were both pregnant and due on the same date). Anyway, we made it. And I quite fancy having a go at another 20. Also credit to the kids who’ve been distracting us for 18 of those years."
The duo originally lived in London before relocating to the Cheshire countryside of Knutsford. Speaking to Cheshire Life magazine, Rachel opened up about her and her family’s choice to move up north. She said, "It didn’t take much thinking about. I was fortunate with the timing – my children were young, my husband had flexibility with work, and we had no ties to London."
The couple is parents to four children: daughters, Rose and Alice, and sons, Sam and Henry. In a 2017 interview with Great Britain Life, Rachel shared that originally she and her husband planned to have two kids. But she later persuaded her journalist husband to have more kids. In her words, "I spent quite some time persuading my journalist husband, Luke, that our family would be complete with a fourth child; quite something when we had originally planned to have only two."
Later, in 2025, during her appearance on the Mid Point Podcast with Gabby Logan, Rachel opened up about her fourth pregnancy and wondered if it was selfish of her to have the baby, as there were possible health risks in it. The BBC Breakfast star shared that her first three deliveries were relatively uncomplicated, but in the case of her fourth pregnancy thinks were different. Her fourth child, a son, was born prematurely at 31 weeks. Expressing her regret, Rachel said:
"I had three very sort of straightforward pregnancies, and I made the terribly arrogant assumption I'd have a fourth baby, and it would be fine and straightforward. And I think sometimes when I reflect on it, I think it was a really selfish thing to do. I came from a big family - I really wanted a big family."
