Apart from Tom Rodrigues, Anthony and Gay had three more children, Patrick, Susan, and John. The duo first met at Sunday school. They even lost two of their children, Patrick and Susan, when they were 26 and 37 years old. While Patrick died in a car crash, Susan’s death was a result of alcohol addiction. Tom’s parents were living in Paradise, California, after his father’s retirement. However, Tom lost his mother in 2007, and his father tied the knot once again when he was 82.

“I won an art competition in kindergarten with my drawing of a chicken and my teacher still has that on her wall in her home to this day. She told me I was going to be famous with my art and I never forgot her saying that. I was basically self-trained and have done art in one-way or another ever since. When I wasn’t playing sports for the school or in Little League, that’s what I liked to do.”

Tom Rodrigues said that he grew up witnessing racism in various places, specifically when his entire family went on a tour for three months, going through 23 states. Tom even attended the mass on Sundays, and his family used to have a get-together every weekend.

Tom Rodrigues initially trained himself under his friend Roger’s father, John Hogan, who was involved in the glass business. Tom later became an expert in painting and eventually launched a business called Sunrise Studios with Roger. They were joined by another man named Tom Stanton. Sunrise used to make lampshades for restaurants. Although they were school students at that time, Tom started training others about everything that he had learned so far.

During his senior year at the high school, Tom Rodrigues left his home because he was unable to adjust to the house rules. Tom was earning a lot of money in a year, and he started living in a hotel until his graduation in 1972. His parents later bought two trailer parks and made him a manager for one of them. The situation took a different turn when Tom’s parents found him with a girl inside the trailer and told him to leave. He then started working at another place in Berkeley, followed by the launch of his own studio, Rodrigues, in Marin County in 1973.

After the launch of his studio, Tom Rodrigues started accumulating different kinds of wine. He said that he could purchase a bottle for a very small amount and sell it later at a very high price. He had the opportunity to work with George Lucas in 1980. He was a designer and production manager for George’s Skywalker Ranch in Marin. Three years later, Tom purchased a property in Hawaii, where he lived for a long time. Tom recalled the same by saying:

“I left the Lucas operation in 1983 and re-opened my studio in San Rafael. I had met and married Marcia and we had a daughter, Amy in 1985 – I taught Amy to ski at two and surf at five. I also dabbled in real estate in Marin and would buy buildings and re-sell them at profit after doing some renovation.”

Tom slowly started focusing more on fine art painting and even organised a show of his work at the Hameda Bailey Gallery in 1986. He started selling his work in various galleries, and his most successful event was Legends of the Stick in 1983. Tom managed to make some friends when he was involved with the entertainment industry for some time. He said:

“At one point I was given a small part in a television pilot that eventually became a made-for-television movie called ‘Mothers, Daughters, and Lovers’ on N.B.C. A friend of ours gave me a script and told me to be on the set at Robert Redford’s Sundance Studios in four days time for a thirteen-day shoot. I had lots of fun, became the set photographer, and made some good friends.”
