Kunal is popularly known as the founder of CRED, and his new position on WhatsApp is a result of a deal where Meta will invest USD 900 million in CRED. While Kunal has exited CRED, Miten Sampat will serve in the same position temporarily for some time.

Kunal Shah has undoubtedly become a popular face over the years for his successful journey as an entrepreneur. While his career has always been in the spotlight, Kunal has preferred to maintain privacy in terms of his personal life. He has been married to Bhavna Shah. But there are no details available on how they met or when they tied the knot. A few sources have claimed that she is a freelance graphic designer. Kunal Shah was born to a Gujarati family living in Mumbai. The family was mostly involved with business, and his father operated a small wholesale pharmaceutical business. Meanwhile, his mother’s identity remains a mystery.

While Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that Kunal Shah will be the global head for WhatsApp, Kunal shared a lengthy post through his LinkedIn account on June 22, 2026. Kunal recalled his journey from 2015, when he exited FreeCharge and continued addressing his achievements over all these years. He revealed that while he is leaving CRED, Miten Sampat, who has been handling the strategy and finance department since 2020, will be the interim CEO.

Kunal expressed gratitude to everyone who has been a part of his journey, adding that he will continue his involvement with CRED as a shareholder. Kunal said that he is expecting CRED to do much better from now on and added:

Kunal Shah enrolled at Wilson College in 1994, where he graduated in Philosophy. He later joined SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS). He gained recognition in 2010 after establishing Freecharge, where he served as CEO and Chairman. In 2015, Snapdeal acquired the company for USD 450 million. Kunal Shah later served as a part-time partner at the Y Combinator and chairman of the Internet and Mobile Association of India.

He has been an investor for companies like Unacademy, Jugnoo, MPL, Vooni, Rupeek, TVF, Zilingo, and more. In 2017, he was an advisor for Sequoia Capital. Kunal was an independent director for Pine Labs from 2021 to 2025. Kunal even served as an advisor for two more companies, AngelList and Bennett Coleman and Co. Ltd.
